    My First Homemade Hammock

I finally got around to making my first hammock. It is a little embarrasing how simple my idea was, and I'm sure that I'm not the first to make a hammock like this. What I did was, I took about 10ft of silnylon (that I bought at Wal-Mart for $1/yd) and gathered each end so I could tie a square knot in each end of the fabric. After that, I tied a 12ft peice of 260lb test line to each end of the fabric. Then I tied each peice to the tree and enjoyed. This is very simple and I have further plans for this design, but the initial, base hammock is a very good, working design. Any ideas or improvements that can be made, please let me know.

My next idea, and I'm struggling on how to do this, is putting bug netting on this. What I'm thinking about doing is making a "sock" that will have a drawstring at each end (foot and head), and I will just bunch it at the foot while I'm getting in and pull it up over me adn draw the string tight at the head. I will use a ridgeline via loops at the top on the outside of the bug netting. This is the best idea that I've got so far. If there are better ideas that I'm not considering, please someone let me know. I am not a very experienced or good sewer, so I'm trying to keep that to a minimum. Thanks for the help.
    God Bless,
    Kyle

If it silnylon, I wouldn't make the base of the hammock out of it. If it's just ripstop, you should be good. A bug sock is a good way to start.

Welcome to the club, the twitching and frequent stops looking for fabric are free of charge.

    Iafte,
The fabric is ripstop, and I thought that the fabric wouldn't work very well either, but my friend and I tried one and it held great. I took a nap last night in it for about an hour and didn't have any problems. It is ripstop silnylon. Would you still not use it though?

You want to use webbing around the tree to protect the bark. Using just line will cut into the tree. Other than that, sounds really good.

    Shadow,
Is there a place that I can go to see how this webbing setup would work? I want to try to make this all on my own, but seeing a picture of something that I could use would be great! Thanks.

Kyle the problem with making the hammock out of sil is it doen't breath and you will get condensation. Besides if you truely scored walmart sil you want to save it for a tarp. I have only looked in vain for the walmart sil. The best way to see if it is truely sil is see if it will hold water.

Dutch (or anyone else who wants to chime in),
I'm sure this is an age old question...what is the best fabric for hammocks if I can't use my silnylon?

For your bugnet, check out this way of doing it.

    Skinner,
That looks great, but its more advanced than what I wanted to do for this first project of mine. I am looking for a way that I can make one long peice of bug net into a cylinder and then put a drawstring closure at each end. I know this will mean alot of wasted bug netting, but I want to make this now and worry about my sewing skills later. I'm just impatient. Maybe once I get better at using a sewing machine I'll be ready to try something like your design.

for the average person 1.9 ripstop nylon uncoated works best for the weight. I don't have any luck at walmarts around here so i pay 5 to 6 dollars a yard at fabric stores.
