Move the hammock suspension closer to the chains and this keeps the chains safely from the ends of the ridge pole. The further the suspension is outside of the chains, the more the ridgepole will flex up. Likewise, move the suspension to the inside of the chains and the pole will flex down.

Hey all! I was hoping to get some additional info from the folks that have made and are using this type of stand. I'm planning on making a couple this weekend with some Scout colleagues with the hope of getting them interested in hammock camping. I've got the basic parts list from the beginning of the thread:

    6 - 8'x2"x2" cut down to about 6 feet
2 - Gate hinges (I picked one that looked like the size that made sense)
8 - 1/4"x2.5" bolts with nuts and washers
2 - small stainless steel shackles
about 10' of some kind of metal pipe type stuff that has one end smaller to fit
inside another piece, cut into two pieces
    some spare rope
a couple of biners (these are sort of temporary until I figure out how I want
to attache my hammock to the stand

Am planning to follow hppyfngy's direction and will be cutting the legs with angles at the top to have a more upright stand. My tarp is 12', so I'll be getting slightly longer top pole than what's mentioned above.

Just curious if folks had specific hardware recommendations or other recommendations for the build. Will be heading to Lowes or HD on Fri night to acquire materials with construction set to begin on Sat.

    Thanks in advance!
    Bruce

I just got back from picking up supplies for three more stands. You've pretty much got the list down.

I haven't come up with a simple cheap solution to the longer ridge pole though. I'd like one too but don't want to buy two of those chain link fence top rails @ $10 each, so I'll probably stick with 10'.

If you're making outdoor stands I think your list is complete enough. For my indoor stands I like to use those end caps that some people are skeptical of. Work for me. And I also like to put rubber feet on the indoor stands.

Some use big "S" hooks and hook right in to the ends of the ridge pole to attach their suspension. Some have drilled through and added eye bolts as a stopper. Some just make a long continuous loop of amsteel and make a big prusik around the ridge pole. Couple of options. I haven't quite decided how I'll do the outdoor ones. I'm trying to make two of these next ones to stay outside and making them as cheaply as I can.
I'll probably leave them taller than the indoor one, just so I can have height for my tarp. Easier to shorten it than to lengthen it if I change my mind...

    Good project. Have fun!

Oh yeah, I like to use big like 1-1/4 fender washers on the nut side so I don't sink into the 2x2. I also use lock nuts, but you can add lock washers if you like. Or not.

    turtle dog stand

I have made 2 so far, ended up cutting the fence top rail in 1/2 so i can take it in a car for certain outings. I had to replace my original gate hinges for a bit more substantial ones. but other then fine tuning the hang they are working great for the back yard. I've only ended up on the ground once

Has anyone found a good cheap top rail that's longer than 10' ?

Preferably a single piece or max two pieces.

(Not that I don't lust after gmcttr's aluminum ones...)

We went to three hardware stores and couldn't find anything longer than the 10' poles. I bought two 10' and we'll cut them down to fit and recycle the rest.

NikkiC, I'm assuming you are talking about the toprail. You'll probably want to start out with the full 10' length and just cut it in half and there wouldn't be any left to recycle. Some are even looking for more than the 10' length.

I'm playing with a top secret modification to this idea, and am using the interlocking mil-surplus poles posted earlier in this thread. At 3 sections of pole (12 feet), I found it to work quite well with my Blackbirds, but I really wanted a bit more length for my Ridgerunner. With 4 sections (16 feet), the poles really started to flex a lot and I was less happy with the configuration. I am improving some of the hardware this weekend, so I might give the 4-section poles another look.

I REALLY wish I had just two more of those poles. I'm just a bit short for what I want to do.

Lowes lists chain link fence top rail up to 22'. Also google "Antenna Mast Pipe".
