Picked up this 1950 model year Singer 201 today for $15 with cabinet. Seems to run well, but I'll probably take it in for a thorough cleaning & tune-up.

What a steal! The Singer 201-2 is a great machine.

No use starting off spending money for normal maintenance that you will need learn anyway. It probably just needs some cleaning and lubricating. Download a manual if you don't have one, get some sewing machine oil and a small sewing machine brush and follow the manual.

Thanks! I'm really excited about it. Wasn't sure what I had when I bought it but glad it turned out to be a winner. Need to get some oil & fresh needles, and spend some quality time getting to know her...

Oh! Forgot to add this. When I looked at it, there was this note attached:

"October 2009. The brown thread in this machine is upholstery thread (bobbin & spool). The needle is a #18 for heavy materials. I used this for mending the awnings."

When I read that I figured it'd be a good machine for gear...

Get some Singer Motor Lubricant Grease while you're at it. You may have to get this online. I guarantee the grease in the grease pots and worm gear needs cleaned out and greased. NO...don't use any of the grease you already have out in the garage. The grease has to travel up a wick to lubricate the motor bearings and other greases won't "melt" and wick.

I have a machine like that(251-12) very fast with full rotory hook. Not having reverse took some getting used to but lifting the foot with the knee and over stitching at the start and finish of seam works fine. Have fun and show us your projects.

I have a Necchi 525FA. I just started it up after a LONG hiatus and it needs some work.

The hand wheel won't loosen and the bobin winder doesn't seem to work. Unfortunately, there aren't any local repair places for Necchi and I would have to send it off to Colorado. So (or sew) I might be taking the thing apart.

    Any repair experts out there?
