    I had either a deer or elk trip over one of my tarplines out on the buffalo river. Whatever it was shook my tarp like crazy and pulled out the stake before snorting and running down the riverbank.

    it was 1971 and i came out west from Ontario. I was 19. I ended up in Jasper National park in a little cheap pup tent. One morning i woke up to crunching all around me. I peaked out the door of the tent to see was surrounded by a big herd of Elk.(-;
    1986 i was working up the Duncan in the Selkirk mnts. of BC in a camp , in a better tent, and in the middle of the night a Grizzly was nudging my tent with its nose. I whacked its nose and he went away. I went back to sleep.

    Not so much my story, but my high school gym teacher relayed this story while we were on a canoe trip. A number of year previous, he heard a noise late at night down by the canoes. Got up out of the tent, and went down by the beach. There was a 3ft drop between the beach and the campsite. Looking out in the dark to see what was making the noise, a black bear stood up on it's hind legs and looked him right in the eyes. The bear standing beach level, he at camp level. He said he didn't make a sound, almost filled his pants. The bear got back onto all fours and ambled away. They were at most 2 ft apart.

    I would've filled my pants.

    Sleeping in my tent with my Bouvier (a herding dog). He woke me up. Something was right outside my tent. Opened up the tent and stuck my head out. Saw legs and then looked up. Mule Deer!!! Lots of them. And my dog wants out of the tent!!! You know, to herd them up!! Had a hard time convinceing my dog that he really didn't want to do that. That was the day I learned how really really big mule deer are.
    I've had lots of encounters with wolf spiders when I was still tent camping. Nothing since switching to a hammock. I sooo love my hammock.
