WBBB DL and Pads

I have used a half inflated neoair with a sportsmans blanket (mylar backed with nylon) for side breeze protection with good success... no slippage, good coverage, warm to slightly below freezing. Adding a cheap ccf when it's colder helps a lot (pads are easy to double and triple up - the R value can be increased quite simply).

Never bothered with a pad/UQ combo. the UQ is warmer when you are able to sink down into the hammock inside it... I would rather the quilt conform without any gaps. Winter yeti has sufficient loft to get me well below 20F. The colder it is, the more side coverage I want with the tarp, as cold breezes seem to creep in through the down - adding a breathable undercover and having a tarp guyed to the ground as a wind break helps.

I have heard people claim the NeoAir doesn't work below freezing... my experience differs quite a lot. You don't want to inflate it fully, even on the ground. Don't inflate any insulated pad fully in a hammock.

On a cold night (20 or below) I use my Therm-a-Rest Ridgerest closed cell pad with my winter Crowsnest. My Ray Way TQ completes the set up. Toasty!

It's the comfort and shifting issue. If the pad is blown up too much it is relatively stiff.

Oh, I thought that less air -> less air to keep warm -> warmer mattress -> warmer night.

OK - want to bounce an idea off everyone here.

I am just about to jump into DIY gathered end hammock and saw this thread.

I want to make a double layered Gathered end hammock with a twist: I want to stitch across the hammock a box to hold a Gossamer Gear Thinlight Insulation Pad 1/4" the 40" x 61" Wide one.

The box would start where my neck is and extend toward the foot end 62". Then I would stitch down the side at the level where when you slide the pad in it fits halfway up the far side. Maybe add some velcro on the opening side to lock the pad in.

My MS Paint skills are lacking so I hope this makes sense: The Solid lines are stitched thru both layers - will they hold up or will the stitches pull the fabric? Gray is the pad itself. I want to use this hammock for three, maybe four season camping.
