Another IX UQ

Just finished a UQ using sclittlefield's sticky: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=23881. Excellent instructions.

I am sure someone has done this combination before but the composition is:
camo layer is 1.1 oz ripstop, the two outer layers of insulation are IX but the middle layer is 2.5 oz Climashield Apex. All the dimensions are unchanged from the sticky.

Total cost is less than $100 and total wt is 17 oz w/o stuff sack.

I tried to take a a pic of the layers stacked but there is not much definition to the edges. I found the Apex difficult to work with but maybe I haven't done sufficient work with it to figure it out.

I am going to try it out tonight on the back porch. Supposed to be 29 degs F overnight.

Did not get to sleep in it that night but had another 29 deg F night last week and did.

I used a Feathered Friends 20 deg F mummy bag and a pad. I need to take a pic of this but I have a pouch sewn to the bottom of my hammock that will accept a pad. It is angled to accommodate my diagonal lay.

I have two pads. One is a Thermarest and the other is a coffin shaped piece of 3/8" foam. I have glued it together from two, 20" pieces at the edges and glued a survival blanket to one side.

I used both pads during the course of the night, one at a time. The foam pad is acceptable but the Thermarest was warmer.

I wore a mid weight layer bottom with hiking pants, wool socks, wicking t and 1/4 zip top with a mid weight balaclava for my head.

I had two cold spots: my feet and my nose. I buried my head in the bag for the nose but I need warmer socks or a pad for my feet.

It took a while to adjust the UQ to get it sealed and I am not sure I have it perfect yet but it worked. I think I could go another 10-15 degrees cooler if I can address the cold feet issues.

I made a IX Climashield 6.0 underquilt and topquilt, IX does not do well compressing. You well need a compression sack for sure!

I may be slow but being retired I dont' need an excuse.

I was asked how well this under quilt packed down.

Here is a pic of the packing for my pack. Far right is a Feathered Friends 20 degree down mummy bag, middle pic is the hammock, rigging and the UQ, and the far left bag is a Marmot down jacket.

All of them are the MLD cuban stuff sacks that are wonderful. I could almost get the bag, UQ, and hammock in one sack.

At the bottom is a sil-nylon tarp, bugnet snake skins with a pouch for the lines built in, bag for ti stakes, and all rigging.
