    Tree straps too short

What do you do I'd your trees straps aren't long enough to reach around the tree? Mine are 5 ft long and I ran into this problem more than once on my last trip. Luckily I was able to find some trees with smaller diameters!
How do you deal with this problem?

    Re: Tree straps too short

I carry 2 pieces of Amsteel with fixed eyes at the ends, they are about 5 feet each. I can use it to extend my straps if needed.

I carry a few Amsteel continuous loops. Larkshead them onto the tree strap, larkshead whoopie onto continuous loop: instant tree strap extender.

I use 4 ft. straps - 90% of the time they're fine for the Northeast. We don't have a lot of old growth trees. If I hang from a tree that needs strap extenders, I'm a happy man, but those trees are few and far between where I hang. Sad.

It's axiomatic that the bigger the trees the further apart they grow so the problem of span plus circumference increases geometrically with, say, old growth vs. new. My new UCR suspension with 1/8" Amsteel can wrap a larger tree.

Just added two Amsteel tree strap extenders (thanks guys). Now I have 4+1+16.5+8.5+16.5+1+4=51.5 feet of straps and suspension. That matches my tarp suspension.

+1 - He will make them to any length you want. I only carry one 4 footer. It has been used a couple of times so far, but I have never needed two of them.

That sounds like a lot of suspension - and you're not even counting hammock length? I'm sporting 4 ft. straps, 6 ft. whoopies, and an 11 ft. hammock for a total length of 31 feet. I used to have 10 ft. straps and 10 ft. whoopies but never saw those conditions.

Do they even have old-growth trees in Texas?

I carry an extra 5' strap with loops sewn in each end. Usually just hangs my pack, but is always there for a strap-extender. Amsteel dogbones are also stuffed somewhere.

I like to keep it kind of simple, 15ft. straps. Haven't maxed out yet, though our southeastern forests are seldom filled with giant trees.
