DIY Driducks Energency Poncho Weathersheild
I got the idea from Jacks R Better Dri Ducks Weathersheild. I then found a DriDucks emergency poncho at Sports Authority online.http://www.sportsauthority.com/produ...entPage=search
I ran shock cord alond all of the hemmed edges. Using grip clips I can keep in position, but its not necessary. Let me know what ya'll think.

Good job - the Dri Ducks also makes a good top cover too.

How long do the dry ducks last? I had one of their ponchos a few years ago and it got shredded in light brush. I was unimpressed, although besides that minor little durability issue it was quite nice.

Yeah it a good fit
The Dri ducks is not the most durable, but it is cheap and light. All materials have their ups and downs. This is the 1ply driducks with a coating. I believe it is ideal as a weather shield or pack cover, I don't know if I'll wear it as a poncho.
Just got done with a week long trip with my wife, on the AT around the Grayson Highlands. The Dri Ducks Emergency Poncho worked great. It is ideal as a weathersheild for 40 degree nights, any less and an UQ is neccessary. Perhaps the standard Dri Duck Poncho may do better in the 30's. It also worked great as a pack cover and groundcloth to set gear on. The irony is that it is less durable when wet. Here are some pics...

What do you think? have you tested it out yet? The poncho I am using is the emergency version, which is one ply. I am thinking about trying out the thicker poncho since they sell them at Wally World now. The emergency poncho comes in at 3oz, I am curious what the weight difference is? I prefer the shock cord down the hems, cause it conforms pretty good. I can see why you would use mason line if it is supporting an UQ.
I have only slept in it on the porch, using my down parka as insulation. Worked well, though I will likely use pads. Now that you mention it, I replaced the side mason line with shock cord. The end lines are still mason, but they don't seem to matter much, as they gather on their own. I think it's a good cheap second layer with weather proofing benefits and a second use as a poncho.
