I am having a hard time picturing in my mind what the run line would look like. All that I can see in my mind is something that I would be tripping over. With that said I would love to, and plan to, start taking my Lab with me this year so I am interested in seeing where this discussion goes. If someone could illustrate the dog run line for me I would greatly appreciate the help.

Kaia (75# Lab) sleeps in the hammock most of the time. when the temp gets up to 50 degrees she likes to sleep on her poncho liner under hammock. i hang about 1 foot off ground with tarp almost to ground so she gets out when she wants. her leach is hooked to my wrist. she normally doesn't need to go for walk till 5 am.

If a dog is going after game (or a creepy person), they usually go with one great jerk.

Some dogs chew to get loose, some K9s get creative in getting out of their collar or harness.

That's a really good point and it would be horrible to be ripped out of your hammock in the middle of the night by your furry friend taking after something that startles it. So I think the most important thing is to know your dog. Stella Blue is trained and knows that in the middle of the night while on the trail if she wakes up or is startled to sit and bark until I wake up and tell her "No Bark". But yes anything can happen and I would hate to be hurt on the trail in the middle of the night by falling from my hammock or having my wrist dislocated. Moral of the story know your furry friend and the behaviors it has in the woods while on the trail.

My baby girl is trained not to chase things, however, bears are fair game, if I am not aware enough to remind her, that chasing is a NO NO. (We live in an area with lots of bears in the Summer). I just do not trust her on the ground with out me there with her.

Stella Blue will often times point before she takes off after game while on the trail. I simply tell her to "Heal" (meaning she comes sits on the left side of me) or just a simple "No Keep Hiking" and she moves on. Another thing that I have found to be quite helpful is that I generally make her carry her own packs. When she is carrying her packs she knows she is working and we are hiking and it's not play time. This keeps her focused on the task at hand. However this does not help around camp or at night because I take her packs off once we make it to camp.

A run line under the hammock might work, if I do not get tangled in the chain!

I would hurt myself even more if I did this

What is too young to take on a hang? I start my dogs going everywhere as soon as I bring them home. It socializes them, then they know how to behave when away from home.

IMHO their is no to young you just have to know your dogs limits. But I am no professional dog trainer so that just MHO. I started stella out on the trail the first day I had her and we went on a trip toogether with the first few months of me adopting her. She was about one and a half years old the first time she went on a trip with me.

At this time, Willow has her own Hennessy Hammock, a Cub. She is not showing any signs of getting out of it on her own, she is close to me so she will wake me if I need help. My little Pug, sleeps in the foot box of my bag.

Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Around the hammock somewhere. She has a water dog coat and does not seem to mind the rain unless it is coming down pretty well, then she will move under the hammock.

I'm picturing a ridgeline, about a foot off the ground underneath the hammock with the dog lead clipped to it so the dog can move up and down it

We are going to try a kids toy tent we found as wind protection for our dog. She is too big to be in the hammock, and we are also worried about the wind so we made her a winter jacket out of sleeping bag hoods. The tent weighs in at 300 grams, so it is not a big deal. It isnt waterproof yet, but that will be remedied soon. And it can double as a safe place for all our packs. It has only a 85cm x 85cm footprint, and we are going to add a small CCF pad. I send pics up next week when we have tested it.

I've been pondering this problem, too. I have a 55# english pointer. Weight is not a problem with him, but he is so lanky. He also has some vicious claws. Even trimmed they look like bear claws. The solution I was working on would be a 5x7 tarp pitched as a small dog house, Sam(dog) tied off to a tree and maybe wearing a warm piece of dog clothing if weather dictates. I still have to try it out a few times and make adjustments.

I have a 75# german shorthair named Kyle. Def too big to put IN the hammock with me! What has worked out well in the past is that I carry a 25' cable lead in my pack. I'm no gram weenie, so it doesn't really matter (I also don't hike that far :P). I just leash him up to a tree by the hammock and call it a day. Usually, I'll have a piece of an old ccf pad for him. He sleeps by me and is usually pretty happy about it.

ditto, but i have Huskies that like to stay out in the cold air. and they carry their own line in their packs.

I won't let the dog sleep in the hammock! He is a 110 pound lab... So he is pretty big. I will have to try some of the other ideas some of you have mentioned.

    Thanks
    Brock!
