    Doin' it on the cheap

OK, as my friend Skypainter tells me, this rapidly becomes an obsession.

I've priced out a bunch of things, but what say you to this?

I own a pretty big mosquito net - I imagine it won't be so hard to adapt it to cover a hammock. (Free!)

Then one of the Grand Trunk singles for around $50

And a cheap tarp from Campmor (like $5-$10, I know there's a weight penalty for the polyetheline, but I'm not an ounce-counter.)

That would do for the summer, then I'd worry about figuring out how to winterize it later.

DivaB just showed an awesome set up with something very similar but even cheaper. I'll try to find the pic (never mind the pink-ness )

Grand trunk ultralight is $20... Or make a tablecloth for less than that...
Live, Laugh, Love, if that doesn't work. Load, Aim and Fire, repeat as necessary...

That's why I got that Yukon on Woot for $20. It was a sweet deal!

Grand Trunk UL is a bit small depending on your size. Some of us like them, but many of us don't. Eno Single....can run into the same problem. Eno DN more comfort.

You'd be able to spend more for a better tarp, or even use a large tent footprint as your tarp, if you just DIY your own hammock. http://www.tableclothsfactory.com/De...p?Redirected=Y Go to rectangle tableclothes, then crinkle taffeta, the longer the better. Ideally you'd want your tarp to go a foot over on each end. You'd want a wide tarp for winter mode to pull in close things off nicely.

With the tableclothes, there is no sewing required. The weight is comparable to an Eno DN.

For an UQ you could use a Poncho liner and add insulation to it. For TQ you can use a patrol bag and cut the zippers off, add a fleece liner for colder weather.....or you could even do a POD with 2 patrol bags, or if you don't move much and can handle laying like a banana then 1 patrol bag....keeping the poncho liner still as an UQ. A less expensive option is going to be heavier, but you can build into it as you go along. At least it gets you out and enjoying things.

You can go to the junk yard and get some old seat belts for your tree slaps or use mule tape.

You can even use old sleeping bags that you may have laying around and do some minor converting to make them work. Our old sleeping bags weigh a ton, and the patrol bags are light and packable, so thats what I went with. There are many other options out there. Just keep reading, asking detailed questions, and looking.

    oh right....

    what she ^ said.

And while I'm at it, a 2QZQ UnderQuilt protector is very reasonable.
You could still go with Diva's poncho liner idea and or the sleeping bag idea for an UQ, then use the UQP for windy/rainy days.

....and I agree with Dos, keep posting, welcome new members as yourself, it doesn't take long at all to get 50 post and be able to participate in the Pay It Forward thread. Also membership is only $10 for an entire year, and worth way more.
