    Smokies Elkmont #24 3/22 - 3/24 (pic heavy)

Back from Tennessee and thought I would share a few pictures from my trip. It got very cold (20s) Friday night but I stayed dry and mostly warm. I woke up chilly twice, but was fine after emptying my bladder. I caught several small trout with my new tenkara rod. I might have to rethink taking waders, boots, and a fly reel with weighted line during transition months. It would be really nice to leave 10+ pounds at home.

    Some pics:

And finally to the neigh-sayers and gram weenies:

WET wood, dryer lint to light, 4 minute boil for 16 ounces.

    Looks very pretty.

I hear you on trip-specific gear: my bike tools come in at something like 5#, even if they don't take up much volume. Finding ways to do more with less is always nice, especially after a long day of moving.

Not sure I'd want to get down into that water in freezing weather. More trouble than it's worth, it seems. But, if that's what makes you happy, go for it!

    Thanks for sharing.

I'm with you, no wading in cold water with freezing air temps. That was the cool thing about using the tenkara, I didn't need to get into the water while fishing with it. The 11' rod gave me 25' cast when using 3' of tippet. I was able to roll cast that full length, so no need for a back cast either. I left the boots and waders in the pack. I'll certainly bring them for the next few trips "in case", but then I'll be wet wading over the Summer. If I find that I can get by with minimal wading I'll probably skip packing them for trips this fall. (and maybe look at a 13' rod as well )

How do you like the biolite? I have been thinking hard about getting one but just can't decide if I want to exchange the ease of screwing the stove onto the bottle.

Great report, nice pics. The Smokies are always beautiful no matter the time of year. The next few weeks will be great while all the wild flowers come into bloom.
