Jarbidge/New River Question

I have a new river long and the stuff sack is kinda large. Its my only complaint. If the stuff sack was shorter and wider I think it would work better for me. It doesn't really fit well anywhere on my pack, but I make it fit because its awesome. It keeps me warm from my head to my feet.

Drop us an email, we can make a custom sized stuff sack up for you to try.

Genrally I look at the stuff sack as one of those things that some will use some won't. For those that do I want it to be loose enough fitting on the quilt to not overly compress the quilt and allow for some squishing of the quilt in the pack so that it takes on the shape of the pack more so. I prefer that rather than being a hard round ball you have to try to figure out how to pack around. But most of how each of us packs our pack is personal preference.

Awesome! I guess you'll be the one to post the side by side photo. Did you go with the standard or the apex insulation? Regular or long?

No Apex...just standard in regular size.

My thought process is my son can use the Jarbidge...which will be a full size quilt for him. But when my wife comes along she can use the full size New River and I will use the Jarbidge.

As for what I will use when I go out solo...that has yet to be determined but I am thinking the Jarbidge.

I was all fired up to order the New River, and then I saw the weight. I didn't like the idea of packing the New River in the summer when my daughter is using the Jarbidge. So I ordered the Jarbidge in Apex, along with a Bear Burrito Oven. I gave it a shot last night, temps started in the low 20's and dropped into the teens. I had a piece of CCF in my bag, a Ledge Featherlite 20, for my feet, and thermals and a fleece top and pants. I also had a Nalgene filled with hot water, and a new pair of wool socks. I really wanted to make it through the night. I was so close. I gave up at 5 this morning, with two frozen big toes. I'm blaming the Ledge. I think the rating of 20 should be more like 40. When I first get in the hammock, I can feel the heat radiating of the Jarbidge almost immediately. I can never feel any warmth of the sleeping bag unless I zip up completely and try to breathe into it.

It was funny climbing into the hammock, I had to shed my fleece within the first 10 minutes or so because I was starting to sweat. I put those back on around 2, when the hot water was starting to becoming cool. The BBO was great, I never felt like I was breathing in cold air, or having my face freeze. I think a decent top quilt would have seen me through.

The weight of the New River in long is listed as 32 oz. The Jarbidge, CCF pad, and BBO together are 28 oz. A few ounces less, and I have a modular system that I can add to or take away depending on the weather.

I wanted to add, this test was done on my back porch. If I was out in the woods I would have made it safely through the night. I didn't want to hang out in the cold anymore when I had a nice warm bed 30 ft. away.

So you almost made into the teens with a 30F rated UQ? Not too shabby! Was your back and butt warm? What was cold besides your toes? Research and consider vapor barrier socks to finally keep those feet warm! With a very thin liner sock, the VB sock ( or bread sacks ) over that, and very loose wool socks over that ( or maybe even no other socks if using insulated booties )

Ya, my back and butt were warm, just my two big toes were cold. I've never done any winter camping, so I'd like to know that I can stay warm and comfortable before heading out. I'll do some more reading on vapor barriers, it seems like the next step.
