    free magic

There is a reference in the article about making a bridge hammock to a product called free magic. Who can tell me about it and where is it available?

Free Magic Velcro, also known as Omni Tape, is a type of Velcro that sticks to itself and does not have the male and female side. Here are a couple of threads that talk about it, including links on where to buy it:

Headchange4u, do you think it is worth the exra cost? Mule
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

you can get here by the roll.

Functionally it is identical to Omnitape. Pan looked at my use of it at Mt. Rogers in January and said that Omnitape has channels on the side for sewing. They otherwise are the same (meaning that there are not separate hook and loop sides, just one side that combines both and so sticks to itself).

I have trouble with the loop side of velcro getting clogged with dirt and lint. Also it can do damage to things like mesh and mason line. Do you have the same trouble with free magic / omnitape?

Issues like this do not go away completely, but are very much reduced. The loops are still "in there", but it's harder for the stuff you don't to get snagged to reach them casually.

Definitely worth it for many applications. It is not near as scratchy as the hook side of regular velcro, so I think it's a must for a head hole in a quilt. Also, it does not catch near as much on other fabrics as the regular velcro hooks do. I wish I had known about this stuff when I made the roll top closure for my backpack. Seems like I could harvest enough smartwool from that to make at least a pair of socks with...

I have some 3/4" free magic I was going to use for my quilt head hole and foot pocket. It did not seem to hold very firmly, so I went with 1" wide free magic.

    Skskinner, et al,

It is no exaggeration that JRB has put miles of omni tape on products shipped all over the world in the last five years....Never a complaint....lots of compliments.... It is clearly superior to regular stuff and while Grizz is correct the issues of velcro never go away completely.... they are so reduced that they are virtually non-issues.
