93athiker and I met him at Woods Hole shelter the night before the hang. He had borrowed his friend's rig (ENO), and this was his first time using it (and first section hike, too, iirc). It was cold and windy, and getting dark when he showed up, and he was very glad to approach the fire. We had set up a little ways off; he decided to hang in the (unoccupied) shelter. He brought a fuel cannister along but forgot his stove, so he borrowed mine - that's another story altogether - to cook his supper. When we told him we'd let him live and return to his wife and newborn child if he'd come to the hang, why he jumped at the chance.
Now THAT is a great story!
