Need help with whipping and fabric

I'm thinking of making my own hammock. I looked at Just Jeffs page and it seems pretty easy. I was wondering if there are any good videos or threads that explain whipping. Also where can I order the fabric that is used on the WB traveler? It seems nice and soft. Also what is masons line? Is it something special? I've seen it used for whipping and was curios about it.

Here's the wikipedia entry on whipping. The links at the bottom take you to animations of a few whipping knots at Grog's site. What you probably want, though -- and what I use -- is the "common whipping" knot. The pictures in that last reference should help.

Masons line can be found at Lowes or Home Depot. It's used in masonry to establish a reference line. You'll want to use the braided kind, not the twisted kind.

    Hope that helps.

    another thought

Instead of whipping the end you can put a simple overhand know at each end (like in the Speer Hammocks). You lose a little length in you fabric, but in most cases of a 10 foot hammock you have plenty of room. Plus the big know gives you a big target that a lark's head know won't get past.
On my hammock I started with a whipped end, but then moved to the know because with my 10 foot tarp ridgeline the tips looked like they were sticking out a bit.

Thanks for the help. I'm on my ipod all day and for some reason the search function doesn't work with the OS on my ipod. Hence these very vague questions that can usually be answered with a quick search. I did use the power of the google to find some info on whipping. Just Jeffs page was the 2nd one to come up. I hadn't seen his page on whipping before. Looks like I should be able to figure it out from there. Now I just gotta find out where to get the snazzy fabric and how much my seamstress will charge to hem it for me.

No worries on the search thing, Dom. Jbryan brings up a good point, though, if you're just experimenting at this point.

FWIW, when making a gathered end hammock I use the whipping to form an eye in the end of the hammock, and then use a becket hitch instead of a lark's head. Several variations on this general theme are possible.

    Cheers!

I do the same thing, except using a double sheet bend for the suspension.
