i'm just starting the whoopi experience, and its so much lighter than my straps with binners
in short, I'm loving it, not so the soft shackle do, to much hassle
i keep my straps just in case the whoopi ever breaks

Tilia,
Check out this link for a different kind of soft shackle: http://l-36.com/soft_shackle_9.php. I didn't like the hassle of milking the original type to get them locked either, but I just made a set of these. They are easy to make and easy to use. Maybe you'll like them. There is another variation here on the forum that uses a whipping knot to lock the loop closed instead of milking the bury too. I have made and like that version as well, but like the simplicity of this one better.
Simple and easy soft shackle that will not fail you.

Whoopies and straps used to have a downside for me as I used Nacrabiners to attach the whoopies to loops in my tree straps and the straps could be too long on occasions.
Dutch buckles cured this.
Whoopies/Ucr's, Dutch buckles and dutch clips on 1" webbing tree straps are as close to perfection as I think its possible to be without Dutch glue or levitation.
I don't miss webbing suspension.
I like to switch out the ends on my play hammocks (not my camping ones) with whoopies, because they fit into the stuff sack. They also adjust quickly. I was set up this past weekend with about a 30' spread on both of my hammocks, because the whoopies would extend so far (second story of a kids fort to get up high enough).
Straps are fine if they suit your situation. WS are my preference. Love or hate in the title of this thread is just sensational word use like the news media.
Last year, I backpacked 1100 miles with Dynaglide whoopies from Papa Smurf at Dream Hammocks. As Festus mentioned, weight is made up of lots of little choices. As a retiree, my hammock helps my comfort in camp, and a light weight pack helps me walk further each day.
This Xmas, everyone who gets a gift from me will find a set of Dutch cinch buckles + Dutch clips + a tableclothsfactory crinkle taffeta 60x126 in their favorite color.
Then I'll hook them by letting them agonize on their own over which TQ+UQ they want (once they give up on the other insulation options).
