Talking Insulation - Space Blanket Design - Help

Well, I decided to splurge and get a hight quality space blanket (http://www.rei.com/product/407106?vcat=REI_SEARCH) to add to my hammock insulation during colder months.

The issue I have now is that the blanket is huge. I would like to slice-and-dice it a bit to cut back on some of the weight. However, I would like it to still be large enough to use for wrapping someone in an emergency.

My plan is to use it regularly in my Hennessy SS. I would like to cut it so it fits under the hammock properly, but could still be used in my JRB nest when I use that instead of my SS.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or advice as to size and shape it should be cut so I can maxamize the usage, and minimize the weight? Thanks.

I am considering making it the identical size and A-Sym shape as my HH UL backpacker.

How heavy is that one? The heat sheet is not much heavier than a reg SB. But I imagine this one will be more rugged. I don't have any tips for how to shape it. I always just try to make sure mine adequately covers the pad. But your idea sounds pretty good. I imagine you would get some extra wind protection that way.

If it's the same as my army model casualty blanket which it looks like it is except mines green where the other is red it's 265 grams.

It weighs 12.5 oz. My current space blanket only weighs 2.5 oz.... But the durability makes it worth the extra weight.

Cabela's has the same thing in olive drab also. Almost the same price, $0.44 difference.

Nice find! I have one of these as well and I've been thinking of rigging it up as an underquilt/underarmor. It says it reflects 80% of heat back, but I'm wondering if this will really fight the power of convection.

Does this sound like it would work? Has anyone tried a similar idea?

What about using a semi-sticky tape to shape it the way you want? Then in an emergency, you could just remove the extra tape and it would still be full size. Just an idea - I know you want to shave grams, not add.

Get a cheaper space blanket like the Adventure brand one that is heavier and easier to work with than the mylar ones but is only about $5 and experiement with it. If you get the double size adventure one you could have enough to try a couple of different approaches. Then after you have an idea of what will work from actually playing with it, you can feel better about cutting the nicer blanket.

I'll second that. The Adventure branded ones are thicker and sturdier than the really cheap ones, but not as heavy and bulky as the quilted and insulated models.

On the Yahoo Hammockcamping site (in the files section) there are exact dimensions for the HH UL. I'm gonna try cutting a Space Blanket to correct dimensions and attach it to the UnderCover with small, spaced-out pieces of velcro, unless someone has already tried this and found it doesn't work. What say ye?
