Replacing HH ropes with buckles and straps

I've got a homemade hammock with buckles and straps. The buckles are attached to the hammock with a loop of Spyderline. It's lark's headed to the buckle and then to the hammock body behind the whipping.

I'm looking to do the same with my friend's HH ULB and I'm hoping to find instructions for taking the end of the HH apart and attaching new lines. For some reason I'm coming up dry.

Normally, I'd just dig in, but it's for a friend and we're leaving in a couple days, so I'd like to be real clear on what I'm doing before I go in. I don't have any more Spyderline, so I'm going to have to just cut lengths of his stock rope to make the loops. I'm not thrilled about that, but I can't think of a better way to go.

I just used the stock rope to larkshead to the rings. I know others have used a short loop of line and prussiced the rings to the stock rope. Taking the stock ropes out is not rocket science, but it is a bit more bother than I have ever felt the need to make.

Here's a picture of the original knot....

Okay, here's where I get real stupid.

You mean that you left the stock rope attached as it came from the factory and tied the rings into that? I'm love to do that, but I can't picture how to tie the lark's head with a single line (rather than a loop) or how to do it without removing the line from the hammock body.

Okay, so looks like I can work the lark's head with the single line and just have a free end. I'm guessing if I just sit down with a piece of rope and a ring for five minutes, this will all be clear.

Thanks for the quick response. I knew someone here would help me reach the "D'oh!" moment.

RR, that's how I have my HH setup right now too. Do you have any trouble with the rings staying aligned? I'm thinking about adding a length of Amsteel, which is what I use on my other hammock. The stock HH line is just so thick that I can't seem to get a tight enough larkshead to reliably hold the rings over top one another. I do have the bigger Omega Pacific rings on the HH, not the SMCs like yours.

make a bight in the rope. Insert the bight through the rings. Wrap the bight around through the rings again and pull the whole knot together at the bottom of the rings. Pull it tight. Presto chango. Leave the stock ropes uncut until you get things adjusted the way you want.

I just make sure to get them aligned as I pull them up tight. I haven't really had any problems. On occasion I have neglected to tie the backup hitch. Then I may slip but with the backup it seems to work fine. But note the stock rope on the Safari is thinker than on the Explorer UL which is what I have now.

On the Safari I tied figure 8 on a bight as a stop knot and used an amsteel loop or something like that to prussic onto the stock rope.

Sorry to be coming into the discussion late. There is an older thread here, where this was talked about at some length. It might be of some use to you.

Ah, even better. That picture of the HH exposed is just what I was looking for.

Now what I'm worried about is later in that thread where you noted the stock HH rope is too big to prussik through a cinch buckle, which is what I'm using.

My hammock ridge line is Spyderline. Maybe I'll cut that up for this. I can replace it with something crappy from the store for now, then switch back when I have time to wait for the mail.
