On the rare occasion my wife goes with me... I provide her with a tarp with doors. Or she throws a poncho on to change. But.. come to think of it... that may be one reason she doesn't like to go with me. Nah... it's something else... but we won't go there.

On our river trips we have a saying...... you don't HAVE privacy......you GIVE privacy. We always bring solar showers on river trips, and we take turns washing up while the rest of the group turns the other way. If you ask nicely, people will be respectful. If they aren't, they don't get invited on the next trip. Although this wouldn't work on a hiking trip..... I have found it easy to change in my camp chair. I have a chair with a fairly high back, so I hang a towel over the back to block the view, and do a quick change while sitting in the chair. The trick is to have your clothes ready at hand for the quick change.
I think changing under or behind your tarp should work well. The other key to the quick change is timing. I try to get up a little bit early, before everyone is up milling around, before the sun is fully up. I like the ideas that others have given of a poncho/wrap/sundress for times when privacy is difficult.

Female here.
I usually add or remove layer or just wear the same clothes ha!
but if in all wet clothes - I'll go in my tarp & change.
towel around the waist helps if needed.

but usually a warning to anyone close by works
"Hey, I'm going over there to get changed"

Sounds funny....but I really like this idea. Could use the velcro wrap during warmer times and this tube idea during colder times. Excellent input guys!! Plus it saves all of us from hearing my 13 year old son yell at the top of his lungs "OMG GROSS!"

Anyway, I used to do a lot of whitewater kayaking. Twice a day there was the struggle of changing without offending or being embarrassed. After a day of paddling I wanted to get out of the cold wet clothes as fast as possible, so didn't worry much about visibility. I usually wrapped a towel around my waist for the worst part.

One lady I met had this big fleece tube she used to change in. She pulled it over her head, the cinched up a draw string around her neck. There was nothing to be seen with that gadget. There's the added benefit of being warm while changing. It was so cool I almost made one for myself.

With the exception of the fleece tube thing I've done all of the above. The worst is changing inside a netted hammock in the heat of the summer. The poncho or the wrap method worked well as does warning the others that you are going to change clothes. However, the best solution for me thus far is my warbonnet superfly with integrated doors. But, as was already mentioned be aware of the shadow.
