    Soft Shackle Variation

Was making some soft shackles last night and one thing lead to another and this is what I ended up with.
Its a fixed eye with a quasi-locked brummel, I start the lock, but instead of doing a second pass thru on the line, I just pull it into itself and have one long bury the length of the line. Then I just tie a diamond knot and cut off the leg that doesn't have a loop in it. Put one of Grizz's sliding knots on the eye and presto soft shackle, and its pretty easy on the eyes too IMHO.
These are just zing-it small utility shackles, but I'm wondering if making some this style from 7/64 would be "safe"? I really can't see why it wouldn't be. The second leg coming out of the diamond knot is cut off and melted into a ball that shouldn't pull into the knot. Seems like it should work. Any opinions are welcome.

    Good luck,

Yes. I've switched to these myself with no problems. Diamond knots are the key. Also, I don't bother burying anything. I see no advantage.

But they do take some fiddling to loop through tree straps and whoopies, so I might switch back to marlin spikes. So simple!

Thanks CW, most knots are easy enough, you just have to practice them.

The only reason I did the bury is to double the diameter of the line so it makes a beefier knot, easier to handle with cold fingers etc.
I just haven't decided if I like having the tails stick out the end of the knot (as in a more traditional SS) or having them this way... from a usability point of view.
    Good luck,

Sure seems promising, will wait for your testing. Kuddos on the long burries in zing-it. I'm definately seeing application for amsteel.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Good looking knot work!

Rain Man, I use soft shackles instead on carabiners on my tree straps. I have a loop sewn into the end of my strap with my soft shackles permanently attached with a piece of zing-it buried the width of the strap and tied off outside of that loop if that makes sense. It keeps the diamond knot centered in the middle of the shackle when the tree strap is hooked up every time and they never fall out and get lost. I have a loop sewn on the other end with my adjustable loop of the Whoopie Sling running through that, so I never will forget my straps on the tree I hung from, and the loop can never get sucked into the bury. I still use the MSH with this setup and it all works well.

I love the look of these!
One note of caution if you make these using Amsteel for your hammock suspension: leave about 1-1/2" of tail hanging out of your diamond knot. Once you put the full load on that knot a few times, much of that tail may be pulled into the knot. Once the knot is "seasoned", you could trim the tail.

    Nice work!

I made a pair a while back with Dynaglide.

I did a locked brummel with a correct bury length. I used the knot recommended in opie's soft shackle tutorial for the stopper knot and I used Grizz's whipping knot.

I've hung on these for one night and they definitely settled in. I lost at least .5 - .75 half inch off the tail.

They are much easier to operate than a traditional soft shackle IMHO.

Guess that means I'm gonna have to get off my butt and make one from amsteel.

Thanks, I had soft shackles on my old rig, and liked them, they were similar to these but different. I just had a "rule" that I never left them open and kept them on the eye of my suspension. They were only open long enough to get them around a tree.
