Well you've been officially initiated. I think we've all had that same first trip experience. Too much weight all the time thinking we could handle it until a few miles in. Over preparing for one set of circumstances while under preparing for others. And because of the hardships created by our own ignorance we come out loving the experience all the more.

That was great. I've had a similar night. I still have much to learn (though I hope I'm getting closer). I'm glad to hear you made it back safe and it sounds like you've learned a great deal. Thanks for posting the trip.

    Great trip report Easttex!

I hiked when i was much much younger, and since being in the States i hadn't gone overnight backpacking until about 4 years ago.
I think my pack weighed close 45lbs as well. I was the opposite though and was Waayyyy over prepared. And that was just a 6 mile loop and had enough gear for a small army to use.
Still..theres nothing better than jumping in and just doing it. You'll learn fast and you'll learn the best way which is by making your own mistakes.

I think you got the bug! welcome to HF.

Good report, Easttex. I was feeling it for ya. One of the best things about hiking/backpacking/hammocking is that there is always something new to learn. Each trip is different with its own lessons. It takes time to dial in the gear kit to the conditions and to your own preferences. The great thing is that you got out there and experimented and had a great time. You've found the right spot here to learn. Probably some other hangers in your neck of the woods. hang in there! It gets better--lots better!

Nice trip report, Easttex! Experience is a Master Teacher! and, of course, Shug! Glad you got out; glad you could see the real value in getting out, and glad you could see the adjustments needed ....they will always be coming along!

    We all start somewhere...somehow.

Look at my pack for a overnight hike in the Alps. Everybody carried dry clothes, sleeping bag & mattress and food/drinks for the night and next day lunch. My pack must have been abt. 40 Pds because it held also Wine in Glassbottles to prepare the traditional Cheese fondue. Plus carrying my longbow and arrows.

Check the bag : its a haversack, not a backpack. It has shoulder straps, but they are rather like 2'' webbing, nothing else. We had to climb for about 3 hours to reach the shelter.

I suffered a lot, but learned my lesson and invested in proper equipments.

I see it this way: if you had fun, and learned something it was a good trip. BTW: you can pick up your Cold Butt Syndrome (CBS) diploma from the table :-)
