i agree the picture should show it in a fence post or something but i also agree with knotty. if it's your tree in your backyard it's your decision. there are two trees in my yard perfect for hanging and the people who lived there before me did that very same thing. i hang there from my treehuggers just to use "real world conditions" but that tree is healthy as a horse. i know this is not good for the trees though.

i do feel Byer should state in the instructions that this method is recommended for home use only. maybe it does , did anyone check. don't get me wrong though, the general public is far too stupid to have that option available and not go screwing eyebolts in every freakin tree they hang from. BTW that dumb kit probably cost 3x the amount of the items from Home Depot.

The Byer of Maine website does state "Perfect for porches and decks!". So, I'll give them a little credit.

The more I think about this the more I think the fault rests with REI. They (REI) are the ones that chose to locate them in the area of the store that they did. I still think it's ignorant to even sell these things as 'hammock accessories', but the world seems to be lurching harder and harder towards the side of ignorance every day, so why should the business world be left out?

If these would have been in Home Depot next to their yard hammocks, fine. They weren't and I think it's a horrible precedent to set.

If there weren't so many parks that already ban the use of hammocks, it probably would be a joke thread. Kinda wish it was.

That would be like putting signs on pickup trucks that say for carrying stuff only not for general driving

You cant really tell people how to use there stuff based on what someone else feels its these types of causes that ruin the power of boycott or public intervention

i completely agree. we get a bad rap for hammock damage to the trees. and you are right about rei. that's why i said people can't handle the responsibility of that option. they are ignorant to the harm that does to trees so they just screw them in without thinking about it. and then the flipside is how parks won't let us hang with treehugers because they are ignorant to the fact that those don't harm trees.

Cannibal I agree with you. when I went to big trees state park here in CA, that was the first thing that was brought up when I said I was using a hammock. I am by no means what we call tree huggers out here, but I don't think this is a product that should be marketed towards outdoor enthusiests.
