I have used my kelty 12x12 with no problems..... i can close off the ends pretty good using spring clips and with the side tie outs there is plenty of room for the hammock without the spreader bars contacting the tarp.

custom cuben hg tarp for my rr

Again, thank you everyone for your comments and ideas for RR tarps. I took what ya'll said and mixed in a conversation with Adam at HG and he brewed me up a custom RR tarp.

I put up a bunch of pics and my comments on the tarp in a new thread in the hammock gear section. Click the link if you wanna see custom cuben madness.

    Here is a teaser thumbnail....

I've found myself torn between 3 tarps for my RR.

I'm looking at the superfly (would add the double pole mod), the Oldman Winter 144" with the exterior pole mod , and the cloudburst (with a set of doors added). I'm looking for the most cost effective way to have maximum coverage as well as a good porch mode for when I'm camping with friends. The superfly was my first decision, but the inability of the doors to completely close led me to the Oldman Winter. Also, I think the oldman with the pole mod ends up being cheaper than the superfly with the diy poles.

Finally, I have seen a few threads mentioning doors for the cloudburst but never any confirmation that they have actually been made. So if anyone has pictures of a cloudburst with doors I would be quite interested in seeing them.

I'm in search of any input on the advantages and drawbacks of each, specifically for coverage, cost effectiveness, and to a lesser degree weight.

Well, I had an OMW with outter pole mod. It was fantastic. Used it in 35mph winds in freezing temps and stayed roomy and taught.

After seeing TT's Superfly with pole mod, the immediately benefit you get with that over the OMW w/ Outer is, from the inside (using prussic on tie-outs) you can raise either side into porch mod, without using your hiking poles and having to get out from under your tarp. I find that I like porch mod awake and close in asleep, and I like KISS fixes to things. This makes this system superior in my eyes.

However, with the OMW I had to carry 6 poles, 2 sets of 3. The Superfly pole mod takes 12. So there's a weight penalty (though I'm not sure of the weights of each tarp, I know the SF is like 18oz) but I find the penalty to be negligible given the advantages.

The cloudburst doesn't have the tie-outs where the doors are on the SF, only has the end tie-outs because realistically with the RR you can't use the doors. But I find those tie-outs to be useful for things like pole-mods and porch mode.

I was in your exact same boat, and went SF instead of Cloudburst for the sole reason of the tie-outs.

    Hope that helped.

Superfly w/doors shut on the RR. Probably about a 6-8 inch gap. Sorry for the low light. It was very early.
