    Recommendations on a second hammock

If any of you have followed my trip report threads, you know that I recently ordered a BB/Mambajamba/Yeti (my first hammocking gear) and took it on a river trip with the family. My brother loved it, and it looks like we'll be hiking some at the end of June. I'm thinking about getting him a hammock for the trip. He doesn't do nearly as much hiking as me, so it's possible that this will end up being a "backup" in my gear closet (or whatever you want to call it).

I love my BB, but I get the impression that I can probably do better on the price. Don't get me wrong... I love the setup I have, but buying all that was not cheap, and I'm not sure a "backup" set of gear warrants that kind of expenditure again. Also, I figure there may be some features of other hammocks that I haven't gotten to experience.

At any rate, I've been watching the for sale forum for someone to sell a HH or something like that. If nothing presents itself, I'll probably order another BB, although I'll second guess myself about ordering the exact same thing (DL 1.1 w/ straps).

Any advice on a "backup" or "second experience" is greatly appreciated.

There are a few HH that get sold on this site, but you can do pretty well on ebay. Since the HH comes with a tarp all you need is bottom protection. You can use a CC pad, but if you really want the comfort of a underquilt you can get a kickassquilt pretty reasonably. That would make a very good second setup. If your brother isn't over 6' or 200 pounds try to get a ULBA. It is worth the weight savings. And think about getting th zipper mod from 2Q/ZQ

He's about the same height as me, I think... right at 6', that breakover point where you never know whether to order the regular or long sleeping bag, and recently, the point where I don't know if a 6' limit hammock will be comfortable for me or not. Neither one of us is anywhere near the weight limit... both about 160.

I would get a claytor expedition and let him hang it under the mambajamba alongside you to save on the tarp.

I assume the expedition is more comfortable than the cheaper mosquito hammock? Can you lay asym in these bad boys at all?

I like your thinking on the tarp! You must be as cheap as me!

I'm 6' 190 pounds. You are still good in th ULBA but it doesn't have the room the BB has. I guess that is why it is a guest hammock.

Not real sure about comfort. I was just coming back to edit to add that the mosquito would be adequate if you don't need the double layer. Just guessing that it would be more comfortable for having a layer of polyester over the pad, as I'm also guessing he won't be getting an underquilt.

I just sold my ULBA - I am 5' 7" and it was okay, but felt a tad cramped to me stretched out full length. Since I routinely slept on my side curled up in a fetal position this was not a huge issue. But I am now completely spoiled by the room in the BB.

For some reason I had this impression that HH hammocks were quite a bit cheaper than the BB. I was just over at the website and realized that while they're a bit cheaper (accounting for the rain fly), it's not by a whole lot. The BB works awesome for me... the only reason I'd go with something else is if it were going to save me a decent amount of money.

Right, but by the time you buy both you haven't saved much over the BB. Does the traveler have a foot box and/or an asym lay like the BB?
