Very nice, thanks. I always make it to the last part (Carrick Bend) but then didn't know how to finish it exactly.

    Thanks!

I prefer the Double Overhand. I use it a lot. It can be used with to form a loop as well.

That is a close approximation, but not quite the lanyard knot/diamond knot that I tie. The version I use starts with a carrick bend and has one last tucking loop to bring the working ends up through the center. So you end up with

Ashley 781 appears to be a version of the lovers knot, which if using two ropes, are just two overhand knots weaved together. Tie it loosely and open it up and completely remove one working end / tail, you are left with an overhand knot in the other working end.

It also appears to be very similar in structure (but backwards/reversed) to the Alpine butterfly. After tieing the knot, Imagine the two working ends are joined and form a loop. Then pull each side 90 degrees to the knot like an Alpine butterfly.

I love how easy this version is to tie.

I would not recommend the double overhand knot. When I tested various nacrabiners, the overhand knot did not hold more than about 600 lbf, IIRC. The lanyard knot is a bit more effort to tie, but gives a much higher failure load.

Ashley calls #781 a Two Strand Diamond Knot. It's a crown style knot, unlike the Lover's knot.

I've been seeking the Ashley's depiction of the Carrick style Diamond Knot... anyone know what number it is?

Okay guys, I've read most of the thread now and I just don't understand the need or use of these nacrabiners... What does it replace or improve and how would I implement it on, for example, my tarp ridgeline? I ask this because I am still not thrilled with my tarp's setup.

I am pleased with everything else in my setup at this point so maybe these things can help me with my tarp.

Nacrabiners, or loop shackles, replace carabiners. They give you a load bearing segment with a latch.

They improve on carabiners by being a fraction of the weight, soft, and inexpensive.

Where you would use a carabiner, you may use a loop shackle.

I think it does for most folks Patrick. You said you were tying the carrick bend version. That is the one that has been load tested and proven to work well.
    I'd stick with it.

The video below calls itself a diamond knot, Mac does not think that it is...does anyone know what knot I mistakenly learned this morning while practicing making some biners?
