    Hammocks not camping units?

Had planned on a weekend hang at Lake Lurleen State Park just outside Tuscaloosa, AL with some friends. I had heard from someone at the Walls of Jericho trip that father and his two sons had been asked to leave the park when they had attempted to use their hammocks. I called the park this morning to inquire if indeed you were not allowed to hang hammocks in the park. The lady told me that you could hang hammocks and that there was no rule against hanging hammocks in Alabama State Parks but you can not sleep in a hammock, you can not sleep under a fly or under the stars. You can only sleep in a "camping unit" (tent or camping RV/trailer). She said that hammocks are not camping units. I tried to explain that our type of hammock camping was actually like tent camping but just not on the ground. She suggested that I call the Park supervisor Monday and maybe she might allow me to come out and demo the setup but ultimately it would have to go through the Park office in Montgomery.

Maybe all of the hammock companies and other hammock accessories companies should change their names. We could have Hennessy Camping Units, Warbonet Camping Units, Speer Camping Unit Products, etc.

We will have to change the name of this forum to campingunitforumns.net.
Somehow it just doesn't have the same ring.

I had no trouble hanging at Oak Mountain State Park. Then again, I also had a tent camping unit pitched on the site for a ground dweller.

    wow. What a bizarre rule.

What if you are a super hippie and like sleeping on the ground without a tent? As in just a sleeping bag, do they allow that?

OR what if you're a car camper, aka you sleep in your car when camping?

    Alabama is ruining hippy lives.

dude, go out to hurricane creek on the east side of town and camp there. in my opinion its one of the best spots in town. I forget the road its on exactly but you go down 15th street east, and veer left at a fork, eventually you come to a bridge that crosses the creek and has a parkin area beside it. Alot of people go there but you can walk the trails to find a spot. Really nice with rocks walls and shallow waters.

We Florida folks can't even hang a Hammock in a State park, so at least you got that going for you!

Florida state parks suck for hanging.

For the most part, when people hear "hammock" they picture the rope net backyard hammock. For years when people would ask me if I sleep in a tent (non-backpackers), i would respond, "yes but it is suspended between two tress so it is off the ground. Much more comfortable that way." The image the previous description provides is more accurate than the one if I answered, "no I sleep in a hammock".

So, for the OP I would rephrase the question as "May I suspend my tent between two trees?"

The few parks I camped at in Oregon, I never asked. I had a ranger stop by and check to make sure I didn't drive nails into the trees. He even tried it out and got the website from me to possibly order one. Maybe he's a member here. I gave him this site address as well.
