    Help for the newb :)

    Hey guys,

New guy here, (I introduced myself in the intro's thread) looking for some expert advice. I understand that the question, "what's the best hammock?" is hard to answer so i'll try and narrow things down as much as possible as not to be a nuisance... I'm 6'1" 170 pounds and looking for an ultralight setup. By ultralight I mean the closer to 2 pounds the better but I would be happy with anything under 3. With ultralight I understand some things need to be sacrificed but If I could get a bug net in a setup under 3 lbs. that would be ideal. I am mostly familiar with Clark Jungle Hammocks, and Hennessy Hammocks but i'm hoping some of you can lead me to other brands that I should be aware of. I would not be opposed to some DIY projects either if it will help cut costs and lighten my load. Speaking of cost i'd like to stay under $300. I will be using the hammock from about June through September. I may need an under quilt or some sort of insulation as I get further into September but lets leave that out for now. Do you think I would be better off mixing and matching components from different companies? I'm excited to hear what everyone has to say. let me know if more information would help you, help me. Thanks!

I can't answer this... But under 3 lbs should definitely be doable including whoopies and tree straps... Just pick up a stick on the trail for the marlin spike hitch...

Are you talking 3lbs with hammock, tarp, and all insulation needed? Or just the Hammock and Tarp? Because that is a lot of hammock and tarp from under 3 lbs and the insulation is going to be determined by night time temps you typically encounter.

3lbs gives you a whole bunch of wiggle room. Try WWW.warbonnetoutdoors.com and take a look at the Blackbird.

That Darien UL looks like a good option.

I knew I missed a few thins. I'm talking hammock, tarp, suspension, and if I could get a good UQ and stay under 3 pounds that would be great. I'd like to be warm down to 20 degrees F. I have a 20 degree bag and i'm a cold sleeper. The insulation would be outside the $300 though unless you think it's possible to get all that under $300.

    Thanks for all the replies!

If you want to DIY you can have everything you want under 3lbs and under $300 easily, asuming you already have access to a decent sewing machine and lots of free time. However if you're wanting to purchase your items you're going to have a hard time staying in your budget and weight range.

Tarp - Warbonnet Edge (Olive Brown) $85 10oz (no lines)
Hammock - BIAS Weight Weenie Micro $50 6 oz
    Bug Net - BIAS Buginator $65 9oz
    UQ - Jarbridge $100 20oz

    Total = $300 45oz (2lb 9oz)

You can DIY a suspension for less than $10 spent and only add about 5oz and figure another 4 or 5 oz for tarp riggings depending upon stakes.

Just a suggestion of a setup off the top of my head and a little googlefu..Butt in a sling's Weight Weenie Micro is one of the lightest hammocks available but we've made one even lighter. At a miraculous 6 ounces (52-inch version) and in a bag that scrunches up to the size of a softball, the Weight Weenie Micro is incredibly lightweight and is strong to boot! Comes in a marpat camo.........

    SPECS

Width: Varies by selection. 52 inches (132 cm), 60 inches (152 cm), 64 inches (163 cm)

Finished Length: 11 feet (132 inches or 335 centimeters)

    Weight: 52 inch - 6 oz. (170 grams), 56 inch - 6.5 ounces (184 grams) 60 inch - 7 oz. (198 grams), 64 inch - 7.4 oz. (210 grams). Weights include channel loops and bag with paracord and cordlock

    Weight capacity* - 225 lbs. (102 kg)

Wilderness logics TAD POLE 1.2 Silnylon, 132" x 92". With Web Ties Outs ,Total pack weight 11.5 oz add suspension for hammock and tarp & tieouts

DIY a Tulle bugnet check out fronkeys video how to great video! Tulle does have to be handled with care though it is not the most durable fabric but I have heard of people using one for years.

    Total around 1.8lbs
    Price around $190

Once again just a random setup there are lots to choose from
