I've been trying to come up with a way to splice an eye in it for the bar and I just couldn't get there, that is an awesome idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks everyone. It came to me while laying in the hammock (a great tool for thought).

Red...I think the end buries should be stitched to make sure they stay put while packing.

Hey...that does work Red. Pips...I put both through the same side and it looked like cr_p so I came up with this method to get a uniform look...

I missed quite a bit of this conversation while I was out in the woods. I used the PVC with a 7 inch width. I tried knot bones on one end and whipping on the other. They both seem to have held although I think one of the knot bones may have slid. My wife said it was much more comfortable. Not quite sure how to keep the bar from sliding until I saw the splicing idea.

Here are some pics from this weekend.

Quick question. How much shorter can you go with the hammock using a spreader bar. This could open up opportunities for lighter, smaller tarps although probably not by much. For instance if you have the spreader at 6" at each end what would this equate to for shortening a say 11' hammock?

Thats a good question? My main hammock for the last couple of years is only a nine footer anyway. I don't know if a 9' hammock would lay like and 11' hammock if you installed the spreader bar?? I just made a new hammock this morning and I made it 10', I'll play the the bar on that and see how it goes. Even if I don't use the bar 10' will be plenty long for me I think.
    Good luck,

I just love the innovation that happens on here

Great job Red, and all of the others.

This has gotten me thinking again about a very short hammock with a footbed, like Sgt Rock's but more modified

I got my hands on some carbon fiber rods that I plan to try. I will start with the hammock at 10' and the try to shorten it bit by bit. You would think it would have to help on some level You probably giving the spread of 6" down the hammock from the gather. Intriguing.

Very cool. I look fwd to an report on your progress.
The channel in the hammock I made this morning should be large enough for me to try to put the bar in the channel.... we'll see.

That was what I was waiting to see. I don't want to drill on the carbon tubes if I can help it.
