One Line

During the Fall LA hang I had the opportunity to see and tryout lots of different gear and setups. So I put all the items that are being replaced in the “you can barrow this stuff box” and ordered everything for the new setup that I couldn’t make. This would be a SB Pro hammock, a larger silnylon tarp and 100 ft of amsteel.

Let me say right now, this was not my brain child. Tim aka tbctx had this on one of his rigs. Thank you my friend.

I know what you’re thinking; the tarp / ridge line is sagging too much. But when you are in it, it pulls to the right tension. If you want to just have the tarp, unshackle the hammock and pull the line tight with the whoopies.

A few pig tails (that’s what I call them) of the right length with a larks head knot and the bug net is in place. And like I said, when in it, the tarp / ridge line goes horizontal lifting the net to its full height.

Yep I need to install a pull out on the side.

Going to sew Velcro on the door flaps for that easy to close, positive seal option.

I’m not going to kid you, coming up with the correct length loopie on the hammock to get the most comfortable lay was a VERY trial and error process. But the way I looked at it was, take as long as needed, because when it’s right, it’s right from now on. The only thing I would have done different would be to have made a longer soft shackle. But I had no idea the loopie was going to turn out to be as long as it was.

Great to see this in pictures! I have been watching the Single Line Suspension discussions pretty closely - hope to find time this winter to experiment a little.
Do you think that the butterfly knots might diminish the working load limit of the Amsteel enough to be a problem? What do you think is the minimum distance between trees you can use with this system?

I like a lot of bury length on my whoopies ( 12”) just to be safe. The tarp is laid with the 12’ along the ridge line. So the minimum distance that I have been able to get it to fit between is just a few inches under 15 foot.
I'm sure there is some loss factor, but I saw two people at once in Tim's so i'm not too worried about my 160 lb.

This may be a novice question, but is it just a whoopie connected to the tarp ridgeline via soft shackle, or just one continuous line with splices that act like a whoopie? Just curious is all. I'd be interested in trying something like this but I'd like to be able to easily separate the two and just put a ridgeline on the hammock if I change my mind.

Nicely done Drifter! Don't you love the ease of set up with these SLS? My first used the Alpine Butterfly Knots also and after tying and untying then numerous times trying to set the length, to the point of sore fingers. Finally just went with short,3", ABLs and whoopies to the hammock. Used this last season with good resullts but being one who can't leave will enough alone have switched over to buried loops in the SLS to connect the hammock whoopies to eliminating the ABLs. So far they are working and I will be giving them a field test session this season.
