How about just making a IX UQ with however many layers and putting velcro on the perimeter then attaching velcro to the KAQ for a removable IX layer. This could be just for the existing KAQs .

There are at least 2 out there now. One went up to Canada and the other somewhere in New York. I haven't heard anything negative back from either one....

    I wouldn't expect to...they're good quilts.

It will take some side by side comparisons @ relatively cold temps to tell us anything.

What about a separate weather shield for existing KAQ owners. I've played with the idea of a Hennessey SS but perhaps this would be more useful, double up in cold weather or buy itself in moderate weather, with the KAQ alone in between.

Macintire came up with something like that for his KAQ sometime ago and it was dubbed MacKAQ... I plan to do that with the IX I bought after I receive my KAQ, Ill use it to get the size right and use it as an extra insulation or stand alone for warmer weather.

This begs the question... the MacKAQ is a IX liner that goes on the inside of the KAQ... would it make more sense covering the outside considering its a thermal barrier to reduce heat being lost by the KAQ?

The MacKAQ can be rigged either way, because it has it's own suspension. I never did put it on the outside, but it would work just fine. Perhaps Rilmoigan would test that for us...

I think you are right, it makes more sense to put the IX on the outside. Of course, you could make two inserts, and put one on the inside and one on hte outside.

Mac, with your experience with IX quilt design- I believe you started with a rectangular quilt then you tried a quilt with edges curved in. Any advice on what works better as far as design goes whether the IX UQ is under or on top of the KAQ?

Good fit is imperative. I made my sock like a Dory, using Just Jeff's design, and it fit the PeaPod very well.

IX doesn't work well when you try to gather it. You have to play with curved edges and darts in order to get it to fit a gathered hammock.

I believe it works well both on top and underneath, if it fits.
