Extenders

I had some amsteel left over this weekend from making whoopies and thought I make an extender for my new ridgeline. I plan to use 2.2 zing-it and wanted to be able to disconnect one end. I use a toggle setup now. one end is easy in that you just make a locked brummel but the other end is a problem in that you would need to pass the finished end thru the working end to form a locked brummel on the other end. I just did a 4" bury and will sew it as per sampson. Has anyone else tried this? Any solutions I missed? Maybe just a continuos loop? Surely this will be plenty to hold a ridgeline?

You can always make a McDonald Brummel...it is difficult is small line, but possible.

My ridgeline extender(s) are matching pieces of lawson ironwire with and an eye spice on one end and a back splice on the other. When needed I just tie a bowline in the fixed ridgeline and lark's head the eye splice in place. The end with the back splice is left to tie off to my tarp keys.

Am I missing something?

You can get the completed locked brummel through the working end with a little persistence. I did it with 2mm STS-12-75 (previously known as Endura-12) on my last bridge.

I see, sounds pretty sound to me. I guess I was wrong in calling them extenders in that I'm not extending just using it as a part of my ridge line. I now use a long section with loops on both ends at the head end and a continuos loop on the foot end. I use a small toggle to connect the two. The hammock seems to pack easier with out the ridge line fastened and this makes it easy.

I tried till my eyes crossed. It is 7/64 Amsteel, that is a lot of mass to get thru that hole. But may give it a second shot. Thanks

Try enlarging the hole with a larger fid before trying to pull it through.

Ah! I see you're talking about the SRL on your hammock not the trap ridgeline. Sorry for my confusion. Carry on.

Yes, I use a pen or pencil to enlarge the hole.

I use knitting needles. They come in lots of sizes and are cheaper than a good FID.

The McDonald brummel gets a lot easier with practice. There's a trick to which way you push the mass back through to open up the line again, you always want to make sure your untwisting it, not twisting it tighter... really hard to explain, but really easy to show someone...
