Where have the spinn tarps gone?

I've been absent from this site for the past 6 months, so I'm a bit out of touch with any recent hammocking developments. But I notice that no one seems to be selling spinn tarps anymore. Warbonnet & OES no longer list them as options.

    What happened to spinn tarps?

Quality of the current stock of SPINN not up to par. Not as water resistant or something. The Jacks still offer a version of their hex tarp in Spinn. Every now and then one comes up for sale on forum. That's where I got mine. Here's one for sale right now. I'd grab this if I were looking for a Spinn tarp:

Some sort of issue with the waterproof coating in manufacture of the spinn fabric was stated by Brian at oes as his reason for not building tarps with it. That was a while ago. It seemed that the maker had changed its process and it effected the tarp world, but the primary purchasers didn't seem to have issue with the change. He went on to explain that only one place made the stuff and it would be cost prohibitive to get a run of fabric made.

Because the main product of spinn is sails, the waterproofness wasn't an issue. The tarp side was a pretty small niche for this fabric.

The hammock historian in me is wondering when this went down and if there is a thread talking about it?

From what I read the cost is high enough to make cuben not such a sticker shock and probably better long term YMMV

I don't know but if you listen you can prob track them down by the sound they make.

I think spin was "the new hot thing", a tad lighter but not up to par as a tarp. As indicated, it is sail cloth, good water resistance was good enough.

As someone who owned and uses spinnaker sails, made of spinnaker cloth, My experience is the water resistance breaks down with wrinkles/stuffings over time when used as a sail. A new one is very noisy and "crinkley" sounding. Very soon, they just are noisy, then they will start absorbing a little water.

I've not made the jump to cuben yet because I want to see its usefulness beyond the true UL, specifically its durability proven or a little while longer.
