    "Nolichuckey"

    "No Business Knob"

Boy, do I love the names of the geographic features back there.

I also like and miss the central and Southern Appalachian terms like branch, stamp, run (creek), knob, gap, hollows, slicks, sods, and lick (mineral deposit where the woodland bison used to lick before they were extinct?). Much more colorful than plain 'ole meadow, pass, creek or ridge.

In New England, they call passes notches.

    Is that all of them?

I don't think the woodland bison is extinct? I do believe a woodland bison tried to kill me about 4 miles out of Banff in a paddock about 10 years ago. (I wrote this so I could use the word paddock because it fits in with all the descriptors you mentioned above!!!).
Another term is 'draw' and the locals use it synom with holler....the locals also call the rhododendron that surrounds my house ivy, I call it laurel to distinguish it from the 'true' rhododendron that grows up on the Roan.

Guess I just mean the eastern subspecies going extinct in the woodlands of the eastern US.

This looks like a good article in the Smoky Mountain News. Neat to think about bison roaming the Southern Appalachian forests and meadows!

    Thumbs up

Thanks for the photos! My wife and I did that as a day hike at Easter about 3 or 4 years ago. LOTS of snow and our water tubes froze.

Looks so nice with all the green in your photos, too! Thanks for sharing.

A bit west of the Appalachians but there's an Interesting Wikipedia entry on the Buffalo Trace from Louisville to Vincennes.
