    Top Quilt Ideas

I leave tommorrow on my first trip with my HH Asym I got this winter. I am stoked! I am using a thermarest pad, bag liner and synthetic bag of undetermined degree rating (I am guessing 32). I see now how you all talk about this as an addiction. I am already pondering what upgrades I want to do! I am really leaning towards the JRB Nest underquilt. My question is what commercially available options would you recommend for a top quilt. I rarely do winter camping. Thanks for your input and advice!

Keep it in the family, JRB Hudson River Quilt. AlsoI think that you will find that you will be warmer overall with the UQ and may not need as much top insulation as you have been using.

If you are going with the Nest (smart choice) then just get a JRB No Sniveler. Also get either a Bozeman Mountain Works Balaclava or the JRB Hood. You also need to find out if you are a "back-sweater", if you don't find this to be a problem, CCF pads like those from Speer, OWARE, and Gossamer Gear can be used in addition to the UQ for low temps.

Having said all that I think a Warbonnet style 3/4 UQ and a CCF pad for your feet is the best set up. That is what Cannibal is currently using on his Thru. Maybe Preachaman's Wife could hook you up.

Does the No Sniveler work with the bottom entry HH?

It works great with the bottom entry. Not having to squirm like a worm into a bag is the benefit. In an HH you don't get the benefit of pushing on the ground or a hiking pole to help get into a sleeping bag because of the attached bugnet.

Any of the JRB quilts will work with a HH. You push the under quilt to one side, get in the hammock, and when you pull your feet up into the hammock, the UQ snaps back into place.

Which would you consider the "best" option for an Asym Expedition? I know it is a matter of personal choice but I would like to hear folks choices and thier reasons why. TIA!

IMO, if you're going to get one quilt, get a JRB with a head hole.

I agree, while I don't have the No Sniveller I do have the Nest. I no longer fasten the Nest OmniTape to the HH Velcro. I never could get it to seal well enough to not cause a cool spot just under my butt. I now just push it aside to get in or out.

I'm the reverse, if I don't mate the Omni to the hammock I get a cold butt.
