i use a clove hitch on the stakes.

Another vote for 2 on the ridgeline only.

When you tie the "and one to me" portion of the taunt-line, (the last hitch) put a loop in it instead. Still just as tight and it pulls out easy in the AM.
This seems to work well for me.
Yeah, I think I might be doing something like that. I make a loop with a twist, then I take the distal line end ( the line between the 1st loop and stake- bitter end?) and make a loop in it and pass that loop thru the 1st loop, and tighten things up. Then the line goes around the stake and back thru the 2nd loop ( the only remaining loop after the above "tightening up"), and tighten as needed. At this final stage, the last "hitch", I will use a loop for that also. When I disconnect the next AM, all loops quickly come apart, almost by themselves, no matter how tight it was pulled. All of the above sounds like a lot of steps I suppose, but it's really only seconds with practice. Works great. Though hard to describe with words. Animatedknots.com shows it nicely.

This is a sweet knot, and it's way easy to tighten the line, and super easy to undo.
I'm a big fan of the Trucker's Hitch you linked to above. That's what I currently use on my ridge line.

Here is another tarp setting question. When using a full ridgeline for the tarp (a line from tree to tree with the tarp on top) how do you attach the tarp to the line?
Maybe I am doing something wrong ?
instead of having a line go from tree to tree, i have a line tied to the tarp's ridge line on each end.
some tarps have grommets but most people seem to feel that a sewn on loop is a more secure way to go.
but either way, most people seem to tie a length of line (maybe 12-15') to each end.
if you run a continuous line from tree to tree, you may have water finding it's way along the line, under the tarp & dripping on you.

I was on my weekly pilgrimage to Home Depot on Friday before leaving for an overnighter this weekend. As I'm walking around the store depressed that I'm missing Blackie's hangout I see these figure 9 thingies. What the heck, I bought some.
Oh man I like these things! They weigh NOTHING and make tarp set-up a breeze. Wish I would have gotten these sooner. For those that haven't gotten them because they fear knots; no sweat, the tie-off is super simple and easier than making a knot anyway.
you found the niteize figure 9's at home depot???? what section?? inquiring minds want to know
