    Hammock Going to Ground

Has anyone thoughts on how I can use my tarp and WBBB hammock in a ground dwelling setup? I did a search on this but just can't find any posts. I thought of buying a bivy bag to use under my tarp set up low in tent mode but HEY that BB is just like a bug bivy to keep the crawlies off and is lighter.
So how to rig up the tarp and ridgeline of the hammock with two treking poles?
    Thoughts?

If your going to ground intentionally I wouldn't use my hammock. I don't want it on the ground even with a groundcloth. Just use a bivy. Or a tent.

My only question is why would you want to? Or is this like in case of an emergency?

Not an emergency. For when camping at the beach and no trees available.

Like you, I was warned the hammock body is vulnerable to damage on the ground which can have grave consequences. It was suggested to consider a separate bug net (only) when going to the ground, and I took that as very good advice. Tarp + ground cloth + bug net (no hammock). Think about a ground pad for insulation as well, which can be used in the hammock or on the ground.

I considered this same issue and decided on a different style of hammock I feel is better suited to going to the ground BUT, I will be using a nylon ground cloth (5' x7'), Exped mullti-mat (40" x 79"), and a 25" x 77" Thermorest UNDER the hammock to protect it when on the ground. Since my travel is kayak/canoe based, I'm not concerned with the weight penalty of the ground cloth and multi-mat. For me, the combination of the "multi-mat" and thermorest (with "chair" cover) allows a ton of flexibility in both insulation, comfort, ground cover, seating etc. In my case, it's all more compact & 4 lbs. lighter, and more comfortable than what I've been hauling when strictly tent based.

Last summer I went on a week long trek across the arctic tundra, and did a light field test of a wbbb and superfly setup in ground mode as there are few trees there.

Using hiking poles it was easy to make a shelter with doors. With the wbbb hung lightly between the poles it kept the mossy net off my face. In a pinch I could have slept there but the living area is small.

I ended up using a tent on that trip: )

A quick look at both Campmor & Campsaver shows they have ground based bug nets, from $30 (9 ozs.) up to $100+. Enjoy your hammock of choice where appropriate. Use a ground net w/ hammock fly when/if needed.
