By fly I assume tarp - I tend to have a 30' ridgeline (continuous) for my tarps. Seems to work for me. If you're not looking continuous simply subtract your tarp ridgeline length from 30' (or 25' or what have you) and put those on either end. I wanted enough to get around some fair sized trees.

I just figured the maximum distance that I could hang the hammock and made sure the tarp could span the same distance.

I prefer to use a ridgeline 'free' setup. Take the idea of the typical ridgeline, just cut out all but the bare minimum of the suspension line and use a prusik on each end to tension the tarp. Provided you use some sort of hardware in your mount points you can mount it to the same mount point as your hammock and you can remove them separately (as needed), so if it starts to rain you can still remove your hammock but keep dry.

Takes less suspension line, is easy to manage and makes double use of your hammock mounting hardware. Just remember to always use tree huggers so as to not damage the trees!
