I'm looking to come up with a new hammock system, one for canoe and kayak expedition racing. I already have a blackbird and an eno btw and tarps for both, superfly with doors and speer swt.
What I want is a faster setup and tear down. I call it the "Gone in 60 seconds" hammock, because that's how long it should take to set up and for me to lay down. Passing out should follow shortly!
After paddling for an untold number of hours and I'm just about to fall over, I want the fastest setup possible.
What I have in mind is that everything is already setup on the hammock and it then all fits into a dry bag. The under quilt is already attached, the sleeping bag is already inside and there's a tarp or weather shield ready to go, and the suspension straps are already attached using the cinch buckles.
Some hammocks already have some of these features that I want, such as the black bird with the straps and clark with a weather shield and tarp.
My black bird would be a good start but it would need a weather shield or an attached tarp such as the speer swt that I already have, though the tarp doesn't have to be that big. Remember, I won't be "camping out" in this hammock, I'm gonna crash in it asap! The blackbird already comes really close to what I'm looking for btw. It just needs the weathshied/tarp.
When it's time to leave it will all stuff into to a dry bag such as the Exped model with the air release valve to help scrunch it all down like it was in a compression bag.
Quick setup, quick tear down, and back to paddling and breakfast in the boat, that's what I'm looking for.
Yeah, this idea has it's compromises from how I'm doing things now in my blackbird. I pack my tarp separately for when it's wet, including my suspension straps. It seems I'm in the rain a lot so this became necessary. If my tarp did become soaked it would be nice to remove it and pack it separately . Everything else should stay attached.
When you're paddling for distance and time in a race I'm willing to make sacrifices but I still want a good sleep if I can get it, hence the hammock (of course).
I'll be playing around with ideas and I welcome others to chime in with their ideas and suggestions. maybe someone has already done this? let me know!
