the "Gone in 60 seconds" hammock design

I'm looking to come up with a new hammock system, one for canoe and kayak expedition racing. I already have a blackbird and an eno btw and tarps for both, superfly with doors and speer swt.

What I want is a faster setup and tear down. I call it the "Gone in 60 seconds" hammock, because that's how long it should take to set up and for me to lay down. Passing out should follow shortly!

After paddling for an untold number of hours and I'm just about to fall over, I want the fastest setup possible.

What I have in mind is that everything is already setup on the hammock and it then all fits into a dry bag. The under quilt is already attached, the sleeping bag is already inside and there's a tarp or weather shield ready to go, and the suspension straps are already attached using the cinch buckles.

Some hammocks already have some of these features that I want, such as the black bird with the straps and clark with a weather shield and tarp.

My black bird would be a good start but it would need a weather shield or an attached tarp such as the speer swt that I already have, though the tarp doesn't have to be that big. Remember, I won't be "camping out" in this hammock, I'm gonna crash in it asap! The blackbird already comes really close to what I'm looking for btw. It just needs the weathshied/tarp.

When it's time to leave it will all stuff into to a dry bag such as the Exped model with the air release valve to help scrunch it all down like it was in a compression bag.

Quick setup, quick tear down, and back to paddling and breakfast in the boat, that's what I'm looking for.

Yeah, this idea has it's compromises from how I'm doing things now in my blackbird. I pack my tarp separately for when it's wet, including my suspension straps. It seems I'm in the rain a lot so this became necessary. If my tarp did become soaked it would be nice to remove it and pack it separately . Everything else should stay attached.

When you're paddling for distance and time in a race I'm willing to make sacrifices but I still want a good sleep if I can get it, hence the hammock (of course).

I'll be playing around with ideas and I welcome others to chime in with their ideas and suggestions. maybe someone has already done this? let me know!

my ENO has a superfast setup. wrap one strap around a tree, then the other, adjust whoopies and done. same basic thing with the tarp thats in snake skins, just wrap it around the trees and leave it in the skins unless you def need it.

with the WBBB, id go with Dutch clips on the straps and Dutch buckles on the ends of the straps so you can just toss the whoopies over them and go.

teardown is just as fast, just the stowage is slow.

I'm not sure that I like the idea of packing a possibly wet tarp in the same bag as my insulation.

I did mention that if wet I'd like to pack it separately. If I get lucky and it's dry, then it's off and running again ....

I can basically do that with my Hennessy and the Super Shelter.. I could just take it and stuff if directly into my bag all assembled. I would however agree with lustreking and keep the tarp separate.

Check out Bearchaser's system, seems like it would be fairly quick. It would be in 2 sections tarp/suspension and hammock/uq/bag.http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=32421

I would agree with REV on that. My ENO DN I can have up and done in about a minute. I'm using elephant trunks and whoopies from smart outdoors. I'm looking at attaching an adjustable SRL for the correct sag every time. Then tie out your tarp in snake skins and only use it when you need it. The other option I would suggest is a hennesy hammock. They come with a small diamond asym tarp that can be removed or if you want better rain coverage. Then ask them to swap out the small diamond fly for the hex fly.
Life looks better from a BIAS hammock.

    Interested in something like this?
    Wildernesslogics Lazy Slug Tube?
Put Dutch clips on the ends of the WBBB Webbing suspension.
Place the tarp in skins with something like dutch flyz on the tie outs.

If you wanted to do all in one you could do like the stock Hennessy tarp and have prusik knots on the suspension lines to clip the tarp to, but that can lead to a saggy tarp. Maybe if they were shock cord prusiks it would self tension. Then you could run the Lazy Slug Tube over the entire getup if its dry or remove the tarp and place in its own stuff sack if its wet.

    Just some initial thoughts.
