Looking for Free Trail GPS Maps for Linville Gorge NC

I have a new Garmin trail GPS. It's the Oregon 450. (Thank you recent REI sale!) Can anyone link me to some free downloadable topo trail maps for Linville Gorge, NC? Want to get something on it before heading down to the Rat Infestation. I do have the forest service map of the area and the cool booklet of trails. Just wanted to play with this gps while I'm there. I'd also be willing to pay some $$$ for a really good topo map of the area. Hoping someone with more experience to the area and GPS devices can point me in the right direction.

My friend ... Ken's web site is just that ... has data there are instructions there for incorporating the data into your GPSr. Ken and Jim are on a scouting trip for the hang right this moment but I'm sure Ken will jump into to give you a hand. Go ahead and PM him too ..

Time for me to hit the sack over here ... couldn't trust any instructions I'd give you right this moment!

ALSO NOTE ... there are trail tracks on there that are not publically available else where on any other maps.

    Try this site: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/nc

I've always had great results uploading their topos into my Garmin.

I agree, GPSFILEDEPOT is a very helpful site. Lots of TOPO maps right into my semi-older Garmin GPSmap76C.

    worked for me...

    Additional GPS Resources

    GPS Visualization

This is a great tool for mapping out paths in Google Earth and inputting them into your GPS.

    USGS

Another resource for digital topos. No real use for a GPS, but still great for visualization.

Gonna start here because I've downloaded from gpsfiledepot before. bdpalace, on your link there is a list of different maps for North Carolina. Is one better than the other. I notice a few have trails listed, but others do not. My question . . . which map is the best download for Linville Gorge trails.

Or do I get maps from gpsfiledepot and then get waypoints from Ken's site? Can you tell I'm a newb at this stuff. I find it a bit confusing.

I'm not a Gorge Rat, so I can't profess as to which gives you the best trail info. However, I do know that their topos are some of the best and if you overlay tracks or waypoints from another site, you should be good to go.

There are no more complete track records of existing trails, proposed trails, unlisted trails than those collected over the last few years on Ken's site.

I can't pull up the site from here in China but there was a topo over lay that was created by a member that is more detailed than the USGS topos of any scale. It's the one I have on my Garmin.

Seriously ... PM Ken HappyCamper ... ya won't regret it.
