Thread: Fabric Weight?

    Fabric Weight?

Im working on ordering the stuff for my bridge hammock build and Im have trouble with the main body fabric selection. I've seen others make theirs out of 1.9 oz fabric (my under standing is that 1.9 oz equals 70 denier)

however, the fabric that I want to use is an ACU pattern only comes in
    1.1 oz (30D) uncoated
    or
    3 oz (40D) Urethane Coated

these conversions make no sense and there seams to be no consistency.

Basically I just want to know if 30D is strong enough to hold me? 185 - 190 lbs or if I need to scrap my ACU plan.

    Thank you

1.1 should hold, but might be better to make a double layer with it and get a pad pocket out of the deal as well.

The 3 oz (40D) is ~1.5 oz with a very heavy urethane coating which is included in the listed weight.

Hmmm, Thats a good idea. If I make it a double body would I need to quilt the two layers together or just sew the edges?

Have you heard of any one breaking through 1.3 oz? lol Thats really what it boils down to. Am I going to end up on my back on the ground in the middle of the night. One of the reason I want a hammock is for winter camping. One other thought I just had was sewing the Under quilt as part of the double body? Thoughts?

On a bridge hammock the long sides would be sewn together and the ends could be left open to slide a pad in.

I tried the sewn on UQ. as i later read in the forums here, however, some say that the layer you are laying on will stretch, possibly compressing your insulation in between the bottom layer. At that point i realized why I was feeling cold butt syndrome with 6oz of climashield apex under me. This was on a gathered end hammock though. Maybe different on a bridge. I removed the outer layer and insulation and made an UQ. Been warm since. Hope this helps.
