if a tarp only has groisgrain tie outs, how can you attach D rings to it? is the only option unthreading and then sewing back together?

Not a D-ring, but would a round split ring, like used in key chains, work instead?
I want to add, tarps are routinely put away wet. With plated hardware, there's a high probability of rusting/staining. Stainless rules.

I attached a small groisgrain tieout to the D-ring and then looped it through the tarp tieout on my OMW tarp. It extended the tarp tieout by about 2 inches and also gives me the option to go diretly to the ground with a tent spike without having the tarp bunched on the ground.
Why would you want to add the weight of D rings when you have a perfectly good loop in the tie-out?
assuming the grosgrain are loops, can't you sort of larkshead a d ring on? Put the loop through, then over the D? Not a smooth lay, but if you need the d.
Split D-ring could work.
