Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

Not counting some passing experiances with the M1965 jungle hammock in the military, serious hammocking started in 2002.... One super cold, wind blown December night.... sure put Smee and I on the quest of warmth and comfort.

I hammocked in high school and college in those mesh hammocks from the military exchanges. First freezing night was ~1993 on Mt Yonah in Georgia. It rained and I didn't have a tarp...the water was dripping off my butt! Slept in normal sleeping bag in the snowy Colorado Mtns...don't know how I didn't freeze b/c I didn't know all the stuff I know now. (Maybe I was too drunk to notice... ) That was all before I really started hammocking seriously.

Then it was '02 or '03 when I got a Hennessy and started reading TrailForums and WB. Got my JRB set shortly after that, then started rolling my own...

Thanks for the welcome and kind words folks.

FanaticFringer, looks like we live fairly close to each other. Maybe we can hang out sometime?

Almost exactly two months ago I was camping with my wife, who had already decided hammocking was the way to go. She had gotten a Byer a few months earlier but this was her first time with it in the woods. She convinced me to have a lie down. It was too small, probably hung with too much sag, and I loved it. That night she slept like a baby in her hammock and I tried to sleep on my therm-a-rest. That will have been the last night I slept on the ground.

I got my Clark soon after, and my Claytor (which I prefer) a couple weeks ago. We built a stand and I've been sleeping most nights in my Claytor. The bed seems so inferior now.

Just got my Speer last summer, first real test was a week spent hanging in Minnesota. Loved it and have used it since. Have done some short weekend backpacks with it, looking forward to a more extended trip with it next spring. (alas, not a thru...) :-(
