Angry Slippery tree straps--what's the solution?

I bought a new set of tree straps recently and they are obviously thicker, more densely woven and stronger than my mule tape straps and my Hammock Bliss straps. The nature of the webbing is exactly like a seat belt out of a car--sort of silky and slippery. The thing is this: they won't hold tight. I cinch them around the tree trunk, they fall loose. I make a marlin spike hitch around my toggle, the toggles slips right out...Super annoying! Only the tension of the hammock completely set up keeps things from sliding.

Is there some sort of sticky treatment I can apply to fix this? Like tar or wax or something like that? Or should I just accept the way they are, in which case, I'll probably go back to some other straps because I can't stand this!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Are they polyester? Where did you get them from?

A few nights in the piney woods should get them gummed up nicely

After a couple of trips they'll probably roughen up and bed in a bit anyway, get some hang time and they should be good I would have thought

I bought them brand new from a cottage hammock gear maker not to be named. I don't want to besmirch their good name. This is just how I feel about these straps. Their website describes them as "seat belt webbing", which is like I said. But, of course, they're only about an inch wide. Very shiny, silky and slippery!

try rubbing them down with some dirt - should take the gloss off and maybe embed some particles for added gripping

note I bought some 1 inch wide polyester seatbelt webbing from Strapworks and have not experienced any problems with it

I've bought webbing from 4-5 different places. It's amazing how different they can be.

Really. That's very interesting. I had not thought of dirt, but I'll try it. I was thinking of something like whatever bankline is coated with. Any cordage experts out there?

    Pips:
I use 1" seatbelt webbing from Strapworks.com religously for all of my straps. If your straps are long enough try a double wrap around the tree before you feed the tailend through the loop. Also you may have to "work" the new stiffness out of the straps. Take your straps and run them back and forth over the top of a interior door, not a lot of force will be needed just enough to see if they are "loosening up".

Back in my climbing and caving days one of the many credos to "Live" by was to never let you ropes, cords and webbing ever touch the dirt and sand. It can cause micro abrasion that can lead to failure. Climbers carry their ropes in bags that have a small tarp built in to lay on the ground to coil the rope out onto.

Most webbing's will "break in" where with use it will get a little bit of surface fuzz to give it a bit of traction...not sure about this specific webbing though.
