Keeping a carabiner as an attachment point with WS

    Hey guys,

Scratching my head over this one.

Recently changed to a gathered end hammock from a channel hammock. Previously I had run a length of webbing through the channel, tied it off with a double fisherman's bend, and used a nano biner as my main attachment point from there - having my hammock's ridgeline, hammock suspension, and UQ suspension all going to the biner, which was flexible as it allowed me to switch things around as I pleased.

Now on this gathered end hammock I'm not sure what to do. I've also changed suspension from descending rings to whoopie slings. Ideally I'd like to keep the biners in the mix as they're so handy to have.

Would an amsteel continuous loop between the gathered end and the biner be the best bet? What would be the smallest size I could make safely using 7/64 amsteel?

Alternatively, would a length of amsteel with a locked brommel loop on either end (saw in another thread) work better? Again, how small could I go with this?

Would placing the biner on the WS work? If I were to larkshead the fixed eye over the gathered end and also attach the biner through the larkshead, or through the left over bit of the fixed eye after the larkshead. Not sure if it'd sit right for the hammock ridgeline, or that is safe - if it would put additional strain on the setup

Or is there another solution out there altogether?

You can wrap a chain link or continuous loop around the gathered end with a larkshead. Then just use your nano biner to connect the loop to the whoopie. Easy peasy.

Thats exactly what I do but I use a dutch clip instead, lighter and smaller then a nano biner.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Ya. Dutch biners are great, but too small and fiddly for my old fat fingers. Had some and went back to Nano's. Guess I'll just have to hump the extra 15 grams.

If weight is the issue, then do away with the continuous loop and the biner altogether and just larkshead the fixed end of the whoopie to the hammock itself. That's the setup I finally went to.

I use a continuous loop of amsteel and thread it through the end channel and then larkshead it. I use a Dutch biner to connect the loop to the whoopie sling but you could just use your carabiner.

7/64 is the most common size used here.

Well, I was leaning towards a continuous loop and I just made a pair to try it out,

But my concern is that the minimum length I can set each suspension to is ~3 foot which is a big difference compared to my old ring webbing setup.

What do you guys do if you find you need to shorten the lengths? I guess the loop, or even the WS could be removed, to hang on one alone? I'm using them in conjunction with 6ft lengths of webbing

Make smaller loops I have done them down as small as a 8" finished loop and you can go shorter than that, then by the time you attach it to the hammock it should be within 6" of the end of the hammock. Add the carabiner and you lines will be better for those tight hangs.

Paul, I read on Opies' tut that minimum bury lengths should be 6"? Is that not the case?

I guess you can just double up the loop then larkshead it.

PS Cheers for the quick delivery on the order, unfortunately it didn't arrive before my last trip but I'm planning another to take your WSs for a spin

You can go a bit shorter, but it also depends on how they are done, I do mine very different than how Opie used to do them. You can also go around the hammock more than once before forming the larks head. Or another option would be to do the first larks head and slide it down the hammock a little and form a second one with the tail so that the link is doubled over with two larks heads side by side at the end of the hammock, then clip into the body sticking up from them.

    Enjoy the slings.
