Single Ring Suspension

wanting to be able to separate my suspension system from the hammock, i went to a similar method, using a DOG BONE & a 2" STAINLESS STEEL SAILBOAT RING(400# minimum failure rate)

i replaced the original HH rope w/ a DOG BONE that extends just out of the HH cover & just far enough to hold the SNAKE SKINS

i now have the SINGLE RING on each end of my HH SAFARI DELUXE, which can be separated, quite easily/quickly from the suspension system of choice

this gives me the ability to pack my DRY HAMMOCK w/o the, potentially, wet suspension system

if i decide to wash the hammock, i will wrap the rings in a sock

i hope i have resolved my PERCEIVED concerns

the HH rope is too bulky, for any perceived increase in strength

the 7/64th's Amsteel has unbelievable strength, IMHO

made a 3' dog bone out of the stuff & used it to pull the grandson's 1-ton dually across the pasture, w/ the jeep and then pulled the jeep back across the pasture

now, suspension options are infinite...

just an OLD man's way of thinking

I've used Bonepiles idea on a single line suspension, 50 ft. of amsteel, and 6' tree straps with a marlin spike hitch. Rings are just outside my tarp, leaving room for tarp that hangs from soft shackle prussics. I have a second piece of amsteel about 5' long with a dutch whoopie hook and another set of rings on it using Bonepiles knot in order to have an adjustable whoopie type sling but it will shorten up to 5 or 6 inches vs. whoopie's 18". Then I can clip my hammock of choice onto the whoopie hooks after the tarp is up. It works great. My only complaint is the adjustability is tough when there's any weight on the knots.

I don't know if this has been tried before, but I like to call this a Single Ring
Suspension, (SRS).

I am very excited about this one. I've tried traditional ring-buckle, UCR, and buntline-hitch. All are great suspensions, but hey, fiddle factor is part of the fun. The SRS seems simple, lightweight, and allows to get right up close to the tree (unlike whoopies and UCRs). So I'm going to experiment with this one this year.

This system clearly works with a solid ring, like SMC D-rings. It won't work with carabiners that don't have a completely round spine. Does anyone know where ti get a lightweight strong carabiner with a round spine?

It certainly will work with a flat spine carabiner, but you might have to add a loop or two, especially with slippery cord like amsteel. I personally like polyester cord like spectra more than slippery cords like amsteel for reasons of versatility without much weight penalty. 2mm spectra is rated at 250kg! You could use 3mm spectra on a cheap carabiner with this rig and be perfectly safe. The carabiner doesn't actually bear much stress at all, as it's just the 'carrier' for the hitch.

My issue is not the strength of the amsteel. It's probably stronger than the old rope.

As far as I am concerned when you took off the Hennessy rope you destroyed the value of the hammock. I would not touch it as far as buying it. The reason behind that has to do with the cloth/rope interface and the other parts like the ridge line that you also messed up.

The other thing worth pointing out is that I would have added another wrap to fill the distance between the two punched holes.

I know I just stepped on a few toes but that's life. As they say, HYOH.

Depends on what version of the HH you have. The newer models are are Being shipped with a webbing loop and the rope is attached to that. With the ridge line cord being attached to the same loop on the inside of the hammock.
