I have a doublenesst and an exped downmat.....with it being so warm i haven't even tried it in the hammock yet....I'm also a gore freak!!! Working outside in all conditions has given me a chance to boost up the cold weather clothing arsenal.....not carhartt either....

I do have an OLD 15 degree bag and I'm wondering if blending that with the exped will be enough....just have to try it out as the temps lower....

Yep, experimenting is good. And when it's something that is new to them but important (like insulation) most people here like to use the back yard for testing. It's a good place to learn what works & what don't.
You will need an underquilt of some kind for the really cold weather, but that Exped DAM will take you a long way. I been using one regularly for several years now.

Yea, underquilts are "Nice" but not necessary*, Pads will do just fine. My first year I did fine with my blue CCF pad, a truckers wind screen & a fleece blanket sort of hung as a UQ.

*You MUST have some kind of under you insulation. Even if sleeping on the ground.

I'm considering doing this hang. I've got a full winter tarp with doors and a walmart blue pad and reflectix type pad. Figure I'd probably need an underquilt but thought I could use my 15 degree down bag as normal and I've got a spare duplicate bag for a family member that I thought I could unzip and use as an overquilt on top of the other bag. I use to do similar for near zero camping in the NC mountains growing up with an army down bag inside a polar tech bag. This was in a tent of course, but it worked well.

Does this sound like it would work? I can definitely test in the back yard prior, but have to get the U/Q first of course.

Yep, that's better than what I started Winter camping with. Remember, you always have a bail out opportunity, that's why we have this get together.

Exactly, since it is car camping, easy to carry more stuff....or bail. Trying to talk another buddy into it as well. He's a little uncertain doing this in hammock or tents although we camp in WV in similar conditions often....however we cheat and sleep in our enclosed trailers (atv haulers)....but spend all day outside in these conditions.

Yep, I think spending all day outside in these conditions is more of a challenge than sleeping in it. Especially after dark.
    Insulated boots help.

I've put myself down on our work calendar to be off that Thur-Sun, and well be down there sometime Thursday evening if things stay as planned. It's a few months away but I'm stoked for this already!!!

Heading to REI tomorrow to scout out some new gloves, and what ever else I come across......
