    Foothills Trail

Has anybody hiked the Foothills Trail? I'm looking for a 75 mile hike for a group of about 8 this summer. Most of us hang, but one or two might be in a tent.

I've hiked it a couple of times, the last time was in 2004. I hiked the route from Oconee SP to Table Rock SP both times. It is a great hike with lots of camping opportunities with hammocks or tents. It was what I considered 'fast trail' at the time I hiked them in that it didn't have a lot of up and downs each day. You usually had one good tug or so each day, not like much of the AT in Georgia where it is one climb after another and wear you down if you aren't conditioned for lots of elevation changes. Most people make pretty good mileage on FT thru hikes.

I had plans to thru hike the FHT last year and it just didn't work out. Maybe this year....

I hiked it in Nov. 07 going from Table Rock to Oconee, and plan to do it again this March.

It's a really nice hike, and the Chattooga section is definitely 'fast trail', as Youngblood says. I'm not so sure about the Table Rock to Laurel Fork Falls section, though.

i hammocked 40 miles of this trail a few years ago. only reason we stopped was cause of the brutal, brutal august heat.

lots of great hammock spots, cool trail.

Are we going to die of heat exhaustion if we try it in July? Is most of the trail shaded?

A lot of the trail is shaded, you actually walk through some pretty cool rhododendron tunnels. Water may be a problem late in the summer. I hiked a section of it in September last year, and there was almost no water

Thanks for that crucial bit of info. I'll have to check that out more carefully as we aren't too keen on carrying lots of water.
