I believe that it is some type of electrical grounding lug. I still have the packaging it came in so I will post the details when I get home tonight.

RR- Knew I couldn't have been the first to think of this. Nice! And I remember seeing that post now when reading through thread the first time. The strap is placed inside tripod like you show, that will eliminate a "tripping hazard". We'll always have extra stakes and extra rope/strap so can use either option.

So much for my memory... I picked it up from the electrical section of Lowes. It is a Side Beam Connector.

Some of this may have been covered before but I couldn't bring myself to read 1000+ posts. Sorry.
Stay tuned for two more stands (& probably more questions).
The bracket I used was designed to hang things from but I'm sure they never intended for it to be used in this manner. After inspecting and installing the bracket, I feel very confident that it will serve this purpose with no issues. The eye bolts will take the compression load and transfer it to the top rail. With my weight, either bracket should only see around 100 lbs vertical load.

As with anything, there are many points of (potential) failure in this system. I wouldn't blame anyone who would want mitigate that with redundant safety measures.

And it probably will work. But keep in mind that it appears that the bracket forms a lever with a 2 to 1 mechanical advantage against the eye bolt nut vs. a straight pull.

There are such things as eye nuts. Pricey, and not widely available, but they would allay all fears.
