    First Real Build

So I made a prototype out of sheets and it works great for the kids, but now I'm on to the real thing.

I'm thinking of starting with this:
    Blank

    And going from there.
    Any reason this wouldn't work?
I need it to hold at least 300 pounds f.y.i.
But, I think that will be enough.

Then I'm going to AmSteel and then webbing, but that is as far as I have gotten.
I'll post picks as the project progresses.

Here's "some" links to get you started:

You can always double layer it. We've had more than 300 lbs in mine, but that doesn't mean it would hold up for any extended use.

kibakichi37, It depends on what feels better to you. I fan fold, lash it, then add an industrial zip tie to hold it together. One of the first people to talk about these, Mr.Clean417 I believed used a sewn through channel and gathering technique, some use knotty's gathered end style. Just read through the posts there are a few different techniques that people are using and it seems pretty much the consensus that what may feel good to one person, doesn't to another, so you may need to play with a few different ways.

I haven't decided yet. The proto-type worked best with an ENO style, but I think a lot of that was the different fabric.
The ENO style does leave the option for a spreader bar though so...
I'm making a total of 3, so I might make three different ones and see who likes what.

One for me, one for my wife, one for dad.

Back in the day, skipping the experimentation stage wasn't an option. This site is such a wealth of info, I would go straight for quality. You will not regret it. Amsteel and ripstop aplenty can be at your doorstep in a week via your friendly neighborhood Fedex man. Walmart used to have it occasionaly on the $1/yd table. I think those days are gone the way of the heini can. I only say go quality because this hobby is so addictive and fun you are going to spend the money anyway. Have a great time and welcome to the club.

I'll make my usual suggestion. Make the first one with a sewn end channel. That will let you try all of the gathering/whipping methods.

That taffeta looks like something similar to what ENO uses, might work well. Check this out though, I made a nice hammock from it: http://www.vtarmynavy.com/cadpat-nylon-cloth.htm

It's not ripstop but it's nylon, easy to work with and super cheap. Be careful with their other fabrics though, I haven't figured out their method yet, ordered something I thought was just like this but it turned out to be the heaviest stuff I've ever seen! Some of it is listed as cloth, some as fabric and they never tell you the weight.
