I'm a bit curious about those recumbent bikes. I've never been on one myself, but would be willing to try it. Maybe I'll have to head over to the bike shop (especially since I haven't visited the local one yet) and give one of those a test ride! I don't know that I'd like it as much (grew up on a mountain bike, not sure how well a recumbent would do off-road), but I am definitely willing to try it out.

I also quit smoking. About 4 weeks clean. Now I won't get those nasty looks when I am camping with you guys and I light up a cigarette.

All right HC4U! If you can stay off them for a month you can stay off them forever.

Good job! Stick with it, it gets easier. I quit cold turkey on October 1st, on my way back from the BWCA last year. I haven't missed it at all, and haven't had one craving. I get enough smoke from the campfires.

I don't smoke cigarettes, but about once a month or longer, I just need to relax with a good cigar or my trusty old pipe. Since my cancer 2 years ago, Amanda made me cut WAAAYYYYY back . I am not addicted though, and could only imagine trying to stop once I was. Soda takes me forever to quite.

Question on the recumbent bikes - how do you load and carry your gear??

You can use the same techniques as they do with upright bikes. (Front and rear panniers, or a trailer. They also have "underseat racks.") As far as loading the gear, the general approach I use is:

    1. Lighter is better

    2. Heaviest stuff on bottom

This is the same as backpacking, I would guess.

Welcome aboard Narwhalin. It's nice to see another bike tourer on here. I've been doing it since the seventies. Even though I've been doing it along time, I still eye ball the gear on every trip trying to figure out what I can do without or what will work better. It's a disease which knows no cure!
I ride a English touring. You can see my set up at http://www.petritsch.net/jarvis
If you must choose between two evils, opt for the one you've never tried before

That's a real nice lookin' setup you have there! I understand what you mean about constantly rethinking what is best, what you need, etc.! I guess I know what I can look forward to for the next 30 years! LOL

Ditto for me. Its only been 5 days for me, but I am determined to be rid of that habit. I love hiking too much.
